Welcome to the 'Atmospheric Physics and Convection' group at NISER
In this group we are passionate about studying atmospheric convection and how it impacts and gets impacted by land-surface processes. We employ our own in-situ observations and numerical simulations of the atmosphere to understand this coupling.
We are currently investigating the following broad picture questions -
What are the physical controls on convection exercised by land cover?
We have found substantial and surprising controls on convection and precipitation from forest extent, forest height, forest type and even forest age.
Can clouds, convective or otherwise, have a control on heat stress experienced during the pre-monsoonal, summer season in the tropics?
We have found a robust cooling impact by persistent low and mid level clouds which are tightly correlated with tropospheric humidity, resulting in a surprising, apparent counter-greenhouse effect from water vapor.
