FICTION She Was My Momma, and I Loved Her Lainie West Momma was not a good woman. In this day and age, she probably would have been hauled off to jail for how she treated her children. There were five of us then: me (the oldest), my sister Railene, and our three brothers Tom, David, and Andy. We grew up in Blind Pass, a little place up in the mountains of eastern Kentucky. That was back before Life magazine and Vista and all those other people who took an interest in us all of a sudden. The youngest boy, my brother Andy, actually got his picture taken for Life; there he was, skinny dirty, no shirt or shoes, with a pair of daddy's pants tied onto his little bony body with some twine, a goofy smile stretched across his freckled face-he didn't know what the picture was for, what it really meant. He was just excited to have his picture taken, like any little boy. We had running water and electricity, but that was about all; we used an outhouse (there was a picture of that in Life, too). It's not completely Momma's fault that she was so hateful. Like my daddy (and most people in the area of the country at that time) she was real ignorant. Neither momma or daddy got much past the fourth grade, if they even got that far. And, as much as I hate to say it, her children didn't turn out much better. Out of all five of us, only Railene and Andy ever got through high school. I got a GED when I was twenty-two, and Tom and David never go that far. No, I would have to say that the real difference between momma and daddy is that daddy had a good heart; momma had the heart of a snake. Momma was fifteen when she had me. She was real pretty back then, all blond hair and blue eyes. And she knew she was pretty. I think Momma's problem was that she truly believed she deserved better than what life handed her. She was always reading beauty magazines, and trying to make herself glamorous, like a movie star or model. Imagine how silly she looked, all dolled-up with no place to go, especially in Blind Pass. Since actresses were hardly in demand in Lainie West, St. Petersburg, Florida, lives with her husband a law student. She received an undergraduate degree at the University ofKentucky. This is herfirst time to be published. 45 eastern Kentucky, Momma became a hair dresser. She was hated by a lot of women, but she never cared, because men, well, men loved Momma, and Momma loved the attention. It was common knowledge that I wasn't my daddy's child; rumor had it that daddy fathered Railene and Railene only. There were three different fathers for the three boys, too. Like I said, Momma loved "attention." Momma always said that a penny spent on her children was a penny not spent on her. Railene and I had three dresses between the two of us; we wore our brothers' clothes to play in, and they only had about four pairs of pants and about five shirts (two of them were daddy's) between the three of them. It was real hard on Railene and me, sharing clothes like we did. I was tall, thin, and looked like momma. Railene was short and fat, with mousy hair. Everything was too short for me, and too long and tight on her. Poor Railene, she was both spiteful andjealous by nature. Both these things have eaten at her throughout her entire life. And she has paid for her attitude dearly; she has always craved love and attention, but has always pushed away anyone who tried. She could never believe there wasn't a hidden motive in their actions. The two of us have fought for years and have spent more time not speaking than speaking. And so my childhood went on, filled with momma yelling and screaming, handing out slaps and pinches like they were Christmas presents. She used to say the... 2351a5e196
