I'm making an animation and at the end I want the screen to fade to black. Is there a way of doing that with an animation? Or do I have to first render the animation and then re-open it when it has been made into an MP4 and then import back into the video editor, add the fade to black and then render it again in the editor? That seems like a lot of work for something so simple.

If that is the case than you can add an edit where you want the sequence to fade and then apply Boris Graffiti or Red and determine how much opacity you want to have and for how long. You can create the end credits with it at the same time.

Put a Fade to Color on the top video track at the end of your sequence--it will look like everything fades to black and you won't have to render your collapsed tracks (which you might have to depending on the complexity of the end of your sequence--effects and whatnot). Then add your credit roll on a layer above your fade, or a few frames after your video goes black. Might save you render time.

Is it possible to increase the length of time that the fade in/out from/to black takes when editing a video in iMovie (added using the Settings pop-up menu in the video timeline(?) panel at the bottom of the iMovie window (apologies if I'm not using the correct terminology))?

Even the manual Transitions > Fade to Black does not work well because it fades to black too quickly (in about 1/3 of the duration of the transition), then it's black for the remaining 2/3 of the duration.

Even the manual Transitions > Fade to Black does not work well, it still fades too quickly. It already reaches black merely 33% into the duration of the transition. I spent hours and figured out a workaround (messy but achieves the desired result).

Let's say you want a fade to black in the last 5 seconds of your video. To achieve that, you will need to set the Transitions > Fade to Black to 15 seconds so that it will fade to black in 5 seconds. Then we will throw away the extra 10 seconds (not trivial).

Instead of using Fade out to black in project settings, I ended up adding Cross Dissolve transition to the end, selecting it, and adjusting its duration in Precision Editor, which could be opened by right-click > Show Precision Editor or Window (in the menu) > Show Precision Editor.

This will not work with the primary use case of fading on V1 because V1 is not blended with the hidden black background as a performance optimization. If it did do blending, then it completely makes sense to remove the option and simply fade the opacity. However, the video processing performance is already an issue for most people in general such that I have not changed this model. If the performance improves significantly in the future then I will change this.

In my current project, the user has the ability to move from one predefined position to another with the use of navigation buttons.

Once the button is clicked, the whole screen fades to black, the camera gets moved to the new position and the screen fades back in.

I have one single clip about 10 seconds long. I'd like the last 4 seconds or so to be a slow fade to black. I insert "fade to black" transition to the end and change "1 sec" to "4 sec". When I play the video, it starts to fade 4 seconds before the end of the video, but the fade itself only lasts about a second then the remaining 3 seconds is black screen. I'd like to slow the actual FADE down to 4 seconds. Is there any way to do that? Thanks!

However, I think that the easiest way to get a long fade is to put your clip into the upper timeline above a black background of same duration. Then, when you move your cursor over the clip that will cause fade handles to appear in the upper left and right hand corners. While holding down the Option key, slide the fade handle in the upper right hand corner to the left to impart a fade of desired duration to the end of the clip. (If you don't hold down the Option key then both fade handles will operate at the same time to impart a fade at the front and end of the clip.)

Seems like a workaround for what should be a pretty simple action. Any idea why the fade to black just won't do a 3 second fade on a 10 second clip with no other effects, text, cuts, etc. on it? Have you experienced this? Thanks again!

A recent ffmpeg with the 'fade' video filter can do this. Unfortunately, the ffmpeg in the Ubuntu repos doesn't have filters enabled for some inane reason, so you'll have to get it from somewhere else (see here).

In this case the fade to black was a short sequence near the start of the project. I placed a corresponding black clip on the master track and faded that in with transparency. Putting a fade out filter on the entire master track would have done something quite different.

What I'm really looking for is some background()-like bit of code that will just lower the brightness of everything in the sketch so that I can then have the next frame be drawn over the previous one, then fade that and draw another, etc.

That time of year when the day seems to fade away. Drifting further into the darkness with each passing day. Pours black with licorice, espresso bean, molasses and black cardamom notes that give way to a feeling of self loathing, burnt opportunities and smoked relationships.

Split your two images to separate layers.

Add a Layer Mask to each.

On each, paint your vignette starting from the exact edge of the image to the distance you wish to fade. It's this exact edge that gives you your total black at the edge point of the image.

Hi forum.

Does anyone know of an easy way to have a video clip start in colour and then about halfway through change to black & white.

I can convert a whole video clip to black and white. But now I want to change just part of the clip to black and white.

Any ideas?

Thanks very much.

Fade to Black is a unique striking color that has the ability to flow through shades of black, blue, green, and white as the glass is flame struck. This is a refined version of our earlier experimental batches, and this recipe is the most colorful, stable and compatible yet.

You can do the same with another transition, like Cross Dissolve, but you need to have enough for both clips to exist during the transition. So if you add a black background before the first clip (not "to the top") and then transition from that black background to the first clip, you need to have more than those 2 seconds for both the black background and the clip it fades into. Both clips. Think about it, both clips are showing in some amount during the Cross Dissolve.

Note that if you are working at the start of the video, then Cross Dissolve is what you want, not Fade to Black. The latter will fade out to black and then back in. But you have nothing to fade out from at the start of your video.

you could think of the fade as a master fade. So instead of including it into the switch, add a Level TOP after it and fade to black there by turning the brightness to 0 or similar.

So your sequence could be:

I have completed my edit in Premiere and used a couple of "Dip to Black" effects as transitions between different moments of my performance. Everything looked great and I rendered the project out. After watching the render, I noticed that on every fade to black transition, a bunch of flickering lines would appear on the white wall behind me.

Imagine that you have a gradient of tones from the brightest possible white, to the darkest black. In 8-bit image (we'll use a greyscale example to simplify) this means the black pixel is at 0, and the brightest pixel is 255 (28 = 256) with 254 possible values in-between.

Why you notice it even more during fades to black is explained by thinking about what happens to our 0 - 255 gradient as it gets faded out. Halfway through the fade the brightest pixel will be half as bright as it was, meaning our gradient now only goes from 0-128. So now the bands will now be 16 pixels wide, and as the levels get crushed down towards 0 they keep getting wider. This is a fundamental limitation of digital imaging.

I am trying to make my image fade to black on one side . I have read the blend tool tutorial in the user manual but all I can get to hap pen is a black and white gradient completely covering my image. I have tried adding a transparent layer over the image and applying the gradient to it but for some reason when one side of the image (using the linear mode) starts to get darker, the other side gets lighter, creating a severely distorted contrast with the image, plus the fade covers an entire half of the image.

Fade to Black is a deep, dusty off-black with a touch of green and yellow undertones. Cinematically inspired, Fade to Black is an ideal color for an impactful entry. Pair with cool whites and neutrals for modern appeal. be457b7860
