Active Southland - Community School Connector (2019 - 2021)
On a three-year contract as the Community-School Connector for Sport NZ's Play.Sport/Healthy Active Living initiative. The role was proactively identify and act on opportunities to strengthen wellbeing through physical activity in different settings: school, club, community and home. Initially I engaged with all 26 local primary schools in the Invercargill City boundary and worked with hundreds of teachers providing pedagogical frameworks to implement into their teaching practices, by the end of the contract period 10 schools were still invested in the initiative and are today still continuing to engage with the second stage of the initiative.
I collaborated very closely Healthy Families Invercargill to engage with the community to maximise the the use of Invercargill City Parks and Reserves, my engagement style saw me being invited into peoples homes for a cup of tea and learning about their neighbourhood and how best the Council could best invest into their surrounding assets to suit the needs of the demographic of the people around it. Much of the insights gathered were passed on to the council's Parks & Recreation team to prototype certain ideas and determine whether to invest more or less into those areas. These outcomes would help increase the uses of our outdoor spaces for increased physical activity and affordable alternatives for recreational ventures
Prior to Invercargill's CBD rebuild I again worked with Healthy Families Invercargill and also Invercargill Central and retailers to develop a Play Trail within the CBD to attract more families into the CBD to spend more time and gain insights for a permanent Play Trail once the CBD rebuild is completed. Currently $5 Million has been secured by the council to invest in play for the CBD.
Over the three years I have gained reliable and sustainable relationships with Sport NZ, Mana Whenua, Local Governenment, youth organisations, sports organisations, schools, community groups, cultural groups and many prominent individuals within our community. Beyond my role requirements, at my own volition I used my videography skills to showcase community initiatives and changes throuhg videos which I would posy via my own scoial media platforms and Active SOuthland's. Other notable achievements at Active Southland was the development of a cultural capability group to strengthen its' awareness of Te Ao Maaori and also the implementation of bi-lingual signage within the offices and the wider Stadium Southland building. I remain in partnership with Active Southland in many community initiatives currently and have over the past year continued to organise community events and help groups gain funding through Sport NZ's Tu Manawa Active Aotearoa Funding Scheme held by Active Southland.
Invercargill City Libraries & Archives - Community Connections Coordinator (2015 - 2018)
As the Community Connections Coordinator my role at the Invercargill City Libraries & Archives was to promote the Library's services and facilities. This role gave me the freedom to be creative and use my initiative to build on existing library programs and create new ones to change the way our community used the library, my first goal was to make the library not just a place to borrow books but to establish a community hub where people knew where to come to connect and learn.
During my time at the library I developed a passion for community well-being and being an employee of the Invercargill City Council I began to understand more of how local government worked and what the community needed. I began to develop a passion for my own whakapapa and began to do a lot of research on my own family history using the library archives and coordinating with other libraries and archives to extend that research, from here I began providing family history workshops at the library and working with people one-on-one to help with their own whakapapa research Maaori and non-Maaori. Today this is still a passion of mine and it has extended to the history of Te Ao Maaori more specifically to Murhiku and Otakou.
I was fortunate to be part of a successful social media team which created some award winning content nationally and during my time at the library we went from under 1000 followers on Facebook to over 10,000 Followers, and this made the Invercargill City Libraries & Archives the most followed library in New Zealand. I resigned from the library at the end of 2018 as I endeavoured to run for city council in 2019, I was insipred by the people I met through my employment at the library really thought I could be a young voice in the council to have some influence at a higher level, I was not successful but I now know that change is created on the ground within the community.
Blue Planet Marine - Marine Mammal Observer (2015 - 2016)
As a Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) I conducted visual surveys of migtigated areas around underwater noise-producing activity (e.g. seismic survey, pile-driving, military sonar etc.) to detect any marine mammals present at the sea surface before operations commence, and in some cases, whilst they are ongoing. This data was collected and maintained for the Department of Conservation for historical data collection. I worked on the bridge alongside people from all around the world, building a vast array of networks of people who I still remain in contact with. This role required me to live offshore for months at a time.
Other Work Experience
I have worked in many roles while living in New Zealand and abroad. As a teacher at Southland Boys' High School when I finished at the University of Otago, I worked in Direct Banking at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia in Melbourne for two years. My of my strengths is in IT and I gained a role as an IT specialist for Western Region Health (now coHealth) in Melbourne where I was part of a team of four which looked after all the IT for over 400 staff. In 2006, I won a competition to be in New Zealand's first ever Boyband. The Edge Radio Station owned by MediaWorks contracted me and four others to record an album and tour New Zealand, I learned a lot out the entertainment industry, rubbing shoulders with some of New Zealand's most prominent musicians and even more gaining a number one single on the New Zealand Music Charts on the 9 October 2006 with our hit 'You Really Got Me'.

Murihiku Matariki Cultural Trust - Founder/Chairperson (2017 - )
In 2018, I identified an opportunity to increase the awareness of Matariki in Murihiku, Southland. After hosting Matariki events in 2016, 2017 & 2018 in collaboration with the Invercargill City Council & Waihopai Ruunaka, it was evident that the community were invested in the Matariki kaupapa and interested in raising the awareness of Te Ao Maaori in the south. In 2019, I wrote a Trust Deed specific to Matariki, with the aim to gain funding to host events and waananga for the Invercargill and Bluff rohe/region. A committee group was establish and representatives of Toi Maaori artists and community champions jumped onboard to organise events related to Matariki. In 2019, the inaugural Matariki Light Festival was hosted at Queens Park in Invercargill and this event was attended by more then 5,000 people. The Matariki Light Festival has now become an annual event celebrating Matariki at Queens Park and was hosted by the Tuurama Trust in 2020 & 2021, before being handed oover to a new organisation in 2022. The biggest success from this kaupapa was the increased iengagement towards Te Ao Maaori from the community and the ability to be able to empowerment new organisations to lead the event into the future.
