I'm in the arduous process of trying to upgrade a couple of our servers to use a current version of the application installed on it and I've gotten a bit stuck. I've gotten everything replaced and have narrowed my issue down to 1 .jar file. If I use the new version of this specific file, I can not get the service to start, and using the old version (and the new version of every other file), it runs fine.

When I try to start the service I get this message: Could not start service on Local Computer. The service did not return an error. This could be an internal Windows error or an internal service error.

EDIT: I have also determined that it is not an issue with my SQL database as I just did all of the upgrades between the versions. I still can't get it to start with the new .jar, and the old .jar still works.

You can't execute a java application as a service. Windows services implement a specific interface that java.exe or javaw.com do not. You will need a wrapper to implement this functionality. One such wrapper is

As Pierre mentioned, you can't run java directly as a Windows service. Apache commons daemon (a.k.a. Procrun) is another tool that will adapt a java application for use as a Windows service.

After days and days of looking around at configuration files, I finally noticed something: We are now using log4j for logging but it wasn't included in the .jar's manifest! I added it to the manifest and it now starts up!

See path in screenshot in initial post and change username to the username you are running under, something like this, substituting version number in your error message for ##.#.## below:

C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME\.ignition\cache\resources\runtimes\##.#.##

Although a year past by, I got the similar error, but initially I got another error first during the runtime unpackaging process. This also happened after deleting the 11.0.xx folder and running it again.

So, just for addition reason and making the topics as complete as possible:

In my situation it happened to be that the runtime.zip wasn't unpacked completely from Temp to the 11.0.xx folder.

I unpacked it myself and copied al folders into the 11.0.xx folder. Problem solved.

I am trying to use SonarQube v9.1.0.47736, Community edition, for my first experience with SonarQube. I have just now downloaded it, and am following instructions to start a local instance. I am running Java v10.0.2.

I first had an error starting SonarCube that complained that my version of Java could not instantiate a certain type of class (something like that) so I installed the latest available version of Java, and now I get this error.

From the last line, I tried to check the Configs->Java and the JavaRuntime->Auto-Detect show: "No versions are currently avaible", even if I refresh, but I have java installed in my system (both OpenJDK 8 and OpenJDK 19):

One thing more that I saw in other post, if I remove the path from JavaPath line in multimc.cfg and I start the launcher, this window show up (and there is the window that shows up if I try to add the path to the java executable):

I am trying to work with CREO Object Toolkit Java, there are few sample apps such as "InstallTest" and a User Guide, I followed the User Guide but still unable to run java apps, I get this error when starting any auxiliary application, "Startup of application failed". My version is 7.0. Can anyone help me?

Try typing "startup failed" in the "Search all content" window at the top right of the page you're viewing this on. Lots of results there, since this question is an oft-repeated one. Likely something to do with not having the JRE installed or your path specification being incomplete or wrong, I guess. I'm not doing any J-Link stuff with Creo, so I can't help with specifics.

But then, I was stuck as to what to do next. How do I know if it worked? I looked around the Internet, and some suggested going to ../SASHome/SASFoundation/9.4/ and then running "./sas". I tried that, but I ended up with these warnings, followed by this error:

WARNING: Display of UTF8 encoded data is not fully supported by the SAS Display Manager System.

WARNING: Normal task completion intercepted.

NOTE: SAH239999I DMS, State, stopped

ERROR: Failed to attach to Java during SAS startup.

I don't know what to do next... I looked on this forum, and one user had a similar problem to me, but s/he ended up editing../SASHome/SASFoundation/9.4/nls/en/sasv9.cfg . However, I have a../SASHome/SASFoundation/9.4/sasv9.cfg file and the value for -JREOPTIONS appears correct. At least, the -Djava.class.path value points to an existing jar file.

Thank you for your prompt and helpful replies! I managed to solve my problem and am posting it in the hopes it can help others. (Though as I will mention later, I'm not out of the woods...but at least I've solved the problem I mentioned yesterday which was the "ERROR: Failed to attach to Java during SAS startup.")

When it encounters an error it can recognize, the Java compiler generates a message indicating the type of error and the position in the source file where this error occurred. Syntax errors are the easiest to detect and correct.

Managing errors and exceptions in your code is challenging. It can make deploying production code an unnerving experience. Being able to track, analyze, and manage errors in real-time can help you to proceed with more confidence. Rollbar automates error monitoring and triaging, making fixing Java errors easier than ever. Once I finished the configuration of everything, that is mentioned within the prerequisites page I started the CABI installation as it is described in Installing CABI - CA Business Intelligence JasperReports Server - 6.1.0 - CA Technologies Documentation resp. Install CABI JasperReports Server - CA Spectrum - 10.1 and 10.1.1 - CA Technologies Documentation.

Due to this exception (missing java class -> com/jaspersoft/jasperserver/api/engine/jasperreports/service/impl/EngineServiceImpl), the tomcat server was not able to start the JasperServer UI application as you can see in the following screenshot:

i. Search for "Configure tomcat" from run window and select the java tab.

ii. Set the values for Initial memory pool to 4096. Set the Maximum memory pool to 6144 and Thread Stack size to 6144, in the Java tab.

iii. Append the settings in Java Options section.

What tool did you use to extract Jaspersoft? I found that when I used WinZip it extracted it incorrectly (placed files in top-level directory). However, my Jaspersoft install succeeded but it would not start...same exceptions in the tomcat log. I uninstalled and used 7-zip (WinRAR will work too) and Jaspersoft extracted everything into the proper locations - the install succeeded and everything started up.
