The only other ntfs driver I know of for linux is the kernel read only one, whether it's any faster at reading. Reading/writing ext2/3 volumes from windows with the appropriate IFS drivers is slow too.

As for ntfs on windows not causing fragmentation even just a fresh install of windows 7 on a 2TB ntfs volume has fragmented files. Windows fragments if it allows faster write speed, that is how it's designed.

Similar to @Hirasawa-yui Hirasawa Yui's reported experience, I am experiencing a very rare but repeating corruption of NTFS on different drives with different use cases. But it may be limited to certain kernel versions and certain ntfs-3g versions. Haven't isolated the problem yet, however the way the symptoms show up is that an instance of VMWARE using a vmdk file residing on NTFS will start throwing a lot of errors in the journal. I'm copying it here in case someone finds it helpful.

Having said all the above, all software can have bugs and for the most part ntfs-3g package in Linux is mostly working really well for over 4-5 years of usage and I have often moved 3-4 TB of data around without problems. be457b7860
