Jane’s teaching philosophy is grounded in the classical music tradition and emphasizes tone development first and foremost, breath control, and a disciplined approach to learning technique, focusing on scales and chords/arpeggios, etudes and building a life-long repertoire through memorization and performance. Trained in the Suzuki Method, the flute students play in workshops regularly, and we are joined by other Suzuki teachers and their students in the Bay Area. Her studios are located at San Domenico School Conservatory of Music in San Anselmo, Marin Lutheran Church, Corte Madera, and her home studio in North Berkeley. Additionally, all students are encouraged to explore other styles. JSince 2006, Jane has featured the following artists in workshops for her students: John Calloway–Latin flute and Charanga styles; Chris Norman–Celtic, Irish and Baroque; Matt Eakle–Jazz and Blues; Adrianne Greenbaum–Klezmer and Baroque. Jane’s students have participated in Stanford Jazz Camp, JazzSchool Berkeley Girl’s Big Band, Interlochen Center for the Arts, SF Conservatory of Music Chamber Music West for HS Students, Dominican College Summer Chamber Music Workshops, and Back to the Master Class in Los Angeles with Jim Walker . Her students have also performed in master classes with Robert Stallman, Robert Dick, Martha Aarons, Almir Cortes (Brazilian Choro), and more.
The Suzuki method emphasizes development of the music student as a total person first and foremost, and every student is encouraged to participate in other ensembles outside of school. Jane’s students are active in Marin Symphony Youth Orchestra, Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra, Berkeley Youth Orchestra, Crescendo Program of the Marin Symphony, Winds Across the Bay, Scottish and Celtic Flute Groups, and more. In 2014 two of her students were Concerto Competition Winners with local youth orchestra: Oakland and Marin, and for 7 years her students have been winners of the Marin Music Chest Scholarship Competition (2 winners in 2014).
