The possible murder of Prof. Saba Mariyam, a strong and socially-responsible college professor from the Central University in Ramanagaram, leads to protests organized by the college students led by Gouri Lakshmi, who wants to seek justice for Saba's death. They get brutally suppressed by the state police. This incident evokes strong protests and demonstrations against police brutality across the country. Under pressure, the Karnataka government appoints ACP Sajjan Kumar to solve Saba's murder case.
When Sajjan starts investigating the case, he finds that four people had burnt her to death and arrests them, but before he could present them before the court, he gets taken off the case. This is because of certain wheels that have been turned in the top police tiers as a consequence of the political connections of the accused. Out of desperation that they might escape judicial punishment, Sajjan takes them to a location under the guise of recreating the crime for evidence and shoots them to death. The encounter leads to Sajjan becoming a hero in the eyes of the public. However, a few human rights activists file a complaint against the encounter, which leads to a court case.

The defense is represented by Adv. Aravind Swaminathan, who reveals to the court and the entire country that this entire case was a huge plot by the Karnataka government to retain their position in the coming elections and the mastermind behind the plan was Sajjan. In reality, Saba was killed by a colleague Vidyasagar, against whom she had filed charges for treating a student Vidya badly because of her caste and her subsequent suicide, by running his car over her and that this mere hit and run case had become the national headline the very next day. When this news reached the Home Minister Nageshwara Rao, he got advised by Sajjan to use this as an opportunity to gain popular support in the coming elections as the IB reports states that Nageshwara Rao's party will lose power.
Sajjan gets arrested, but in another turn of events, it is revealed that it was he himself who gave all the details of his wrongdoings to Aravind through his fellow police officer Murthy, out of guilt. This was his chance at redemption. Sajjan is now in prison where Murthy meets him and reveals about Vidyasagar's arrest and Aravind's past. Aravind was a former DCP who went against Nageshwara Rao and suffered personal losses of losing his wife Padma and was sent to prison on false charges. After learning about Saba's case from Murthy, Aravind used this case to destroy Nageshwara Rao's life as vengeance. Aravind gets rid of his crutches and prepares himself to kill Nageshwara Rao.

Deepa Soman of The Times of India gave the film 3.5 out of 5 writing "Those who love a good political crime thriller inspired from real-life incidents can feast on Jana Gana Mana, that teaches you to think, question, challenge and more as a common man who consumes news at its face value."[8] Pinkvilla gave 3.5/5 and wrote, An engaging Social drama about social conscience and asking the right questions. The Indian Express wrote "Prithviraj steals the show in this preachy and patronising political thriller".[9] The New Indian express wrote "Prithviraj-starrer is an epic, high-impact political thriller".[10] Ancy K Sunny of The Week rated 3.5 out of 5 and wrote "Suraj Venjaramoodu steals the show in a thought-provoking political thriller".[11] Sreeju Sudhakaran of LatestLY gave the film a rating of 3/5 and wrote "Prithviraj Sukumaran, Suraj Venjaramoodu's Film Makes All The Right Noises in a Wobbly, Cramped Screenplay".[12]

You ask something in Malayalam
He replies in Kannada
So you reply to that in Tamil
While he replies in Telugu
Then both of you decide to speak in Hindi.
Then you speak most of whatever you've spoken in Malayalam.
At the very least, .
The main factors holding this drama in the effective zone are its perspective based narrative structure and strong performances from Suraj Venjaramoodu- Prithiviraj. Though it makes impactful commentary on numerous highly relevant socio political issues, the convenient writing and manipulative approach makes it a bit tedious at places. A better cohesive writing could have really turned it powerful. The climax was solid. On the whole, ends up a decent watch.

Jana Gana Mana was a bold & evocative social thriller & courtroom drama features two excellent central performances from Prithviraj & Suraj. The movie gets the broad strokes right and gets its point across pretty well. The twist is great and the movie effectively builds tension in the second half through a series of powerful arguments & monologues en route to a rousing pay-off. Tho, it just would have been better movie if it was more focused and towards the third act it feels like it tried to be too many things at once. Anyways, the basic effectiveness is undeniable.
Jana Gana Mana is an unevenly toned social thriller that goes dangerously close to being exaggerated, dramatized and soon becomes exhausting. The meaning of subtlety and being grounded is the true identity of Malayalam Cinema for which I adore it. Jana Gana Mana confuse you with the location, language and even the dramatic narrative. I don't why a Malayalam film, set in Karnataka, has so many Tamil dialogues? I couldn't even find Kananda for a lengthy bit. Jana Gana Mana looses it's identity in its bloated attempt to be movie across states and languages.
I think for various reasons Jana Gana Mana has proven that why political relevancy has been a part of our society and it's very clear to pinpoint yourself to why they still need the support. Yes, it can be caricaturish which I will come to that point later but I do think it's a very good attempt of how politics is a dirty game for one representative party and can ruin people's life.
about janaganamana,
it felt like the director just wanted everyone to think pulli oru sambhavam aanen. the only merit i see is the movie's selection of theme but they decided to delve in it as much as scrolling through 10 instagram stories would.
so i assume, they chose this theme simply because it is easy to keep us entertained. Easy to create scenarios that end up keeping us engaged. Enough so that when the movie eventually does exactly whatever it criticises, it seems heroic.
before watching this film I had seen an interview of Prithviraj a couple of days ago. he said something along the lines of how Jana Gana Mana is a "pan-indian" film but not in the conventional sense where it is a crossover of actors, but a crossover of themes and the whole "this could happen anywhere at any point in time". one thing that he said that interested me was that this movie is presented in such a way that said time and place did not matter as this is a story that has happened, has been happening and will probably happen again.
Call it an overtly meta reading of what's essentially a simple scene, but there's something about the timing of Jana Gana Mana's release that made this stretch feel a lot more significant. With Sathyan Anthikad's Makal set to release a day later, we get a scene where Jana Gana Mana's director Dijo Jose Antony appears as a college professor. It is set in Maharajas College and the lecture is on Indian Polity with a full strength of students in attendance. But his speech does not compliment the "good students" for attending his class. Instead, his big mass dialogue here forces them to get up from their benches and go out in protest against the murder of a professor in another state. He calls it the "practicals" of the subject he's teaching, but it feels like an event in itself with a filmmaker teaching his audience to be more political. When seen just a day before the release of an Anthikad film, it's a sign of how most makers today have rejected the apolitical stands of films like Sandesham and Priyadarshan's Cheppu to embrace full student participation. Given how the film comes back later to underscore this very point only adds to the film's cleverly deceptive writing. 152ee80cbc
