SERVICE-LEARNING

I completed service-learning with Performing Stars in Sausalito, CA during the first semester of my freshman year. Performing Stars assists Bayside Martin Luther Jr. Academy (Bayside MLK), a school with 96% minority student enrollment. My tasks as a service-learner in the community included: packing 45 bags of breakfast for students, riding in the Performing Stars shuttle to transport students from Bayside MLK to their homes, helping out during after-school baton classes, and assisting in any additional tasks. Assisting Performing Stars allowed me to see the reality of how racism and economic issues affects the community.

During the second semester of my freshman year, I committed two hours per week to having phone calls with seniors over a platform called GoldenTALK. The I Did Something Good Today (IDSGT) Foundation provided me a unique opportunity to give back to my community by serving seniors who come from a variety of backgrounds. Not only was I able to assist seniors who needed someone to talk to, but I also strengthened the skills needed to be empathetic and caring.
