Guitar Sound Demo by Tobias
The Jamboxx began in the mid-2000s, initiated by under the company My Music Machines, Inc. (later marketed as Jamboxx). The company pivoted into a healthcare company Zephyrx.com. We sought a way to play music despite severe physical limitations. We are working to create new technologies and restart production through our new nonprofit.
The Jamboxx is an adaptive musical instrument and breath-controlled MIDI wind controller, designed so that individuals with limited or no hand function can create music expressively using only breath and minimal head movement. It is styled somewhat like a harmonica but functions as a digital interface that sends MIDI commands to a connected computer or tablet. Notes and sounds are triggered by sipping and puffing through the mouthpiece, and lateral movement of the mouthpiece (or head/brace movement) determines pitch or note selection. The device is configured to play a wide range of virtual instruments (from flute and saxophone to guitar, piano, and more) through its software or any standard digital audio workstation that accepts MIDI input.
My Music Machines Inc. donated it's inventory and intellectual property to My Breath My Music USA, our nonprofit organization registered in New York State dedicated to supporting accessible and adaptive music opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Our work is inspired by and aligned with the long-established nonprofit My Breath My Music based in the Netherlands, which has pioneered adaptive musical instruments and inclusive music practices internationally. My Breath My Music USA operates independently in the United States while supporting and promoting shared goals of musical access, creativity, and inclusion.
We have been working with support from the University College London Computer Science Department and MotionInput Games, London, over the past year working on new motion tracking software with music.
We have had support from the Craig Nielsen Foundation as well as Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute through ISATMA.org for researching and building new sensors and hardware and various types of prototypes. If you would like to learn about work that's featured in the videos contact us.
