The enigma of the constant alpha (α) is one of the most fascinating mysteries in quantum physics. The value of the constant alpha is approximately 1/137; more precisely, 1/137.035999206..., which is equivalent to 0.007297353. The proximity of this value to the integer 137 has been a source of fascination for physicists for decades.
Despite its enigmatic nature, the constant alpha is one of the pillars of physical reality. Its value is crucial to enable the universe's existence, as it determines the structure of atoms, controls the interaction between light and matter, and ensures the stability of stars.
The discovery of the constant alpha generated a great deal of curiosity and expectation among physicists. The search for an explanation for its value has become one of the great goals of theoretical physics and a true obsession for some physicists. Over the years, various theories and speculations have emerged in an attempt to explain the origin of the constant alpha. For example:
String theory and other unification approaches, which presume that the value of the constant alpha could be determined by the geometry of extra dimensions of spacetime.
The anthropic principle, a non-physical approach, presumes that the value of the constant alpha was intentionally set for the universe to be able to sustain intelligent life.
Currently, the mystery of the constant alpha continues to challenge physicists. If the constant alpha can one day be derived from well-established premises, it would represent a giant leap in the understanding of the universe and its fundamental laws. For now, it remains a fascinating reminder that there is still much to discover about the nature of reality. The hope of many physicists is that a single theory will one day emerge to explain the origin of the constant alpha and predict its value theoretically. In other words, a theory that can derive the value of the constant alpha from the fundamental equations and principles of physics, and not just measure it experimentally. While that hasn't happened yet, I will present another possibility to explain the origin and predict the value of the constant alpha theoretically, which will be defended in the following thesis:
“Alpha is the bit of the world!”
