Project Traverse is purely an arcade styled puzzle platformer, and with that in mind - it drivers to teach the players it’s mechanics and to help them understand how the world behaves. So, the players feel free to explore new possibilities. And so, they understand and progress through these challenges that is going to test them at both their intellectual level and their platforming skill level. And with all of these, giving the confidence to truly experiment with their learning.
Platforming
As a platformer, platforming challenges will be focused on providing the players with interesting dynamics to move around. And the risk factors that can destroy the player, will challenge the players to survive.
Puzzle Solving
As arguably the most important pillar is puzzle itself. Using the mechanics of the player as well as that of the world, puzzles are what will drive the players forward and give them a sense of purpose behind everything.
Experimentation
One other important aspect of the game is to the teach the player how the world works and behaves and to give them enough confidence to explore different ways to reach the end of a level. And even though the end of each level will require to be finished in a specific way, but the level will be focused on letting players define their own way to reach that end.
2 months of pre-production and 4 months of project development, and we made it! I worked alongside a bunch of experts who taught me so much and literally guided me in successfully completing the project. The idea of the project was for me to showcase my skills as a game designer. And for that I was restricted with very minimum art, mechanics and assets. And yet I learnt how to create fun. Every gap and every block in the game serves a purpose. I also learnt so much I could improve on and be better at it in my next one.
