Volunteer Lifeguard Agreement Passes in Jacksonville, FL

The Jacksonville Beach City Council unanimously approved a new agreement for volunteer lifeguards. To effectively provide lifesaving services to locals and visitors, the City and the Volunteer Lifesaving Corps (VLSC) have agreed. The VLSC will drop its legal action against Jacksonville Beach after the agreement's conditions have been accepted. Beginning on Memorial Day, Jacksonville Beach Ocean Rescue will restart its services. Since 1912, volunteers have assisted city-paid lifeguards in patrolling the four miles of Jacksonville Beach when there aren't any on duty, typically on Sundays and holidays. In 2021, the US Department of Labor fined the City of Jacksonville Beach 2021 for breaking the minimum wage and overtime regulations of the Fair Labor Standards Act for allowing Ocean Rescue lifeguards to volunteer without receiving compensation. Now, with the new agreement, everything will go well. Read more
