I currently have ozone elements (version 9), which has worked well for me for the past 2 years, but I find its starting to be a bit limiting in terms of its features, so I'm looking to finally upgrade. There's a loyalty offer thing going on at izotope where an upgrade to standard edition is 99 dollars, and an upgrade to advanced is 149 dollars.So far, it seems the things advanced has over standard are the tonal balance control, low end focus, and master rebalance. But I'm not sure if those are things I *need*.

I see they are selling $29 for the RX 10 elements on iZotope's website and a crossgrade upgrade at SweetWater website ( --izotope-rx-10-standard-crossgrade-from-any-paid-izotope-product ) for any paid RX product for $99.00.

I'm also wondering about this. Ozone 10 Standard is only in Trial mode here, too. Shouldn't we get a separate e-mail with the serial number to activate Ozone 10 standard? That's what happened with the Plugin Alliance stuff.

Many of the features in RX are also available in other programs. But it also depends on the quality of the repair. What I like about RX is that it offers many settings for difficult cases, but also gives good results with the standard settings.

Anyone who who has tackled audio post production for a film will tell you their nightmare stories. In the middle of the most important lines of the entire movie, the dialog that was delivered to them had a phone ringing in the background, or an airplane flying overhead, or a bus, or an explosion, or huge click, or some bizarre random sound. Watch closely and you will see that nervous tick start in the corner of their eye, and their fists start clenching erratically. And for some reason the actor that spoke those lines is unavailable to come in and do ADR. Well this is where iZotope RX Advanced really stands out, and this was the functionality that made me upgrade from the standard version to the advanced. The price is painful, but once you start really using it the value becomes clear. ($1,199.00 for the advanced, $349.00 for the standard). For this job I exported the section of dialog from my DAW and opened it in the RX stand alone for some real surgery.

The Denoise plugin of the RX standard is pretty good, but took a bit of work to get good results that I felt I could have achieved with the normal EQ and Gate plugins supplied in my DAW. The Dialog Denoise plugin available with the advanced version is another story. This advanced plugin was much more powerful and quickly got me to my goal. This was one of the main reasons that I chose to upgrade to the full advanced version.

Recording on these larger DAWs is not like recording in a standard WAV recorder where you are effectively creating one file. These systems create a new file (or many files if you are recording on many tracks at once) every time you go into record. In Cubase when you look at the Pool (the file list) you see all of them listed by track name. I give my tracks chapter numbers so my files are 01-OliverTwist-Chap-1_01, 02, 03 and so on. On a long chapter with loads of punch ins, I can easily create 200 files.

Editing, as I have said elsewhere, is a question of both examining every part of the recording for errors, levels, timing and gaps between sentences or paragraphs, and re-recording anything I am unhappy with. Although I do punch in when I make mistakes during the recording, I do not take for granted that the punch in is perfect. In fact, it very rarely is, not to a standard I want. When I was a sound engineer (originally working on tape), I prided myself on being able to find the perfect point and manually punch into record, and could work with regular voice-overs like two musicians, getting the timing and breath perfect.
