The Department of Mathematics was established in the year 1965 at The Gandhigram Rural Institute (Deemed to be University), Tamil Nadu. To compete with international standards, research on stability problems on dynamical systems including neural networks and intelligent systems, fractal theory and its applications, fuzzy clustering in medical images, optimization in marketing-related problems, control theory, graph theory, algebraic graph theory are being carried out and the results are published as articles in the SCI/Scopus journals. Funding for research and development is provided by UGC, NBHM, CSIR, and DST-SERB continuously for the past 15 years to the faculty members. As a result of consistent performance in research, the department is recently upgraded with UGC-SAP (DSA) and DST-FIST (level-II). Department also receives library grant from NBHM and equipped with research books and journals.
