Internet of Things (IoT) has emerged as a revolution for the development of futuristic smart cities. It is one of the hottest trends in technology, is transforming our future by interconnecting everything; humans, vehicles, appliances, utilities, infrastructures, street lights and anything through an intelligent connection. The evolution of IoT has been progressively adopted by various organization and industrial community for the development of numerous smart communities (smart healthcare, intelligent transportation systems, industry 4.0, smart grid, Internet of drones, etc). A major shift of technical paradigm has been witnessed in industrial and manufacturing sector. The huge amount of data generated by smart devices can be collected and investigated in an intelligent manner in order to improvise the decision making. IoT has engulfed each and every corner of the modern smart communities to provide sustainable growth of development.
However, the large volume of seamless data generated by various IoT-based devices deployed in smart communities need to be efficiently collected, analyzed, processed using various tools and techniques in smart ecosystem and then transmitted over the conventional communication channel. Despite of all the advancement in communication protocols and revolution in the computing technologies, it is still a challenge to handle the requirements of IoT infrastructure in smart communities using traditional technological architectures. By 2021, fifth generation (5G) wireless communications network is expected to become as an essential unifying fabric to connect billions of smart devices in IoT ecosystem to reshape industries and transform the world. Therefore, to cope with the technical requirements of the IoT ecosystem, a paradigm shift from conventional technologies to new and novel solutions is essential. Moreover, in such a dynamic IoT based environment, security and privacy are two most essential requirements. The advent of new solutions may lead to more security and cryptographic challenges. Apart from this, the sustainability and reliability of these solutions is also an important concern. Hence, most of the recent research is focussed on the development of secure and sustainable technologies and techniques which meet the requirements of ubiquitous IoT ecosystem.
