Messenger has published two reflections by Church of the Brethren members to mark the 20th anniversary of 9/11. Each reflection is written by a church member with a particular, personal connection to the events of Sept. 11, 2001. Doris Abdullah, a member of First Church of the Brethren in Brooklyn, who for many years has served as the denomination’s representative to the United Nations, wrote a reflection titled Light Shines in Darkness. Brian Bachman, who in 2017 retired from a career in the US Foreign (diplomatic) Service, where his favorite assignment was as acting director of the International Religious Freedom office advocating on behalf of persecuted religious minorities around the world, wrote a reflection titled The Cost of Fear.
Thanksgiving for Recovery from Illness
1 I love the Lord, because he has heard my voice and my supplications. 2 Because he inclined his ear to me, therefore I will call on him as long as I live. 3 The snares of death encompassed me; he pans of Sheol laid hold on me; I suffered distress and anguish. 4 Then I called on the name of the Lord: "O Lord, I pray, save my life!" 5 Gracious in the Lord, and righteous; our God is merciful. 6 The Lord protects the simple; when I was brought low, he saved me. 7 Return, O my soul, to your rest, for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you. 8 For you have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling. 9 I walk before the Lord in the land of the living.

Have you ever tried to a row a boat with only one oar? Unless you are constantly switching sides, you get now where fast. There are many things in life where two items work together to make an impact. Read Pastor Hicks's message to learn more about two of these in our Christian life.
For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
AMEN.
