Aline Dürr of Vegan Interior Design
Aline Dürr is an award-winning interior architect, author and animal rights advocate, born in Berlin, Germany and based in Australia.
After moving to Sydney in 2011, Aline established her own boutique interior design studio while working across bespoke interior architecture practices, predominantly within commercial design.
In 2018, the birth of her daughter and her deep connection with animals led Aline to adopt a vegan lifestyle — and ultimately to question the materials she had spent her career specifying. No longer comfortable promoting products derived from animals or associated with animal cruelty, she began researching how the principles of veganism could be applied to interior design without compromising beauty, quality or creativity.
That exploration transformed both her practice and the direction of her career. She rebranded her studio as Vegan Interior Design and developed an educational platform helping interior designers, students and established practices understand animal-derived materials, discover innovative alternatives and respond to a growing market seeking more conscious interiors.
In 2020, Aline published 'Vegan Interior Design', one of the first books dedicated to the subject. The book has reached readers internationally and received the PETA Vegan Homeware Award for Essential Reading in 2021. Through her courses, writing, talks and industry work, Aline has continued to bring vegan design into a wider conversation about materials, ethics, innovation and the future of interiors.
Her advocacy has also extended beyond the design industry. She has organised public fundraising events including Nup the Cup Lunch and Eggless Easter Brunch in support of local animal rescues and has contributed to documentary work exploring the idea that veganism extends beyond food and fashion into the spaces and objects with which we live.
While researching her book, Aline discovered a growing international community of designers, manufacturers and material innovators questioning conventional approaches to interiors. This inspired her to launch the first Vegan Interior Design Week in 2021, bringing together more than 40 international leaders and advocates in sustainable and ethical design to explore environmentally conscious, cruelty-free and innovative alternatives.
In 2024, Aline Dürr and Chloe Bullock founded the International Vegan Interior Design Association (IVIDA), together with a wider group of founding members who helped establish its international community. Today, IVIDA connects members across the world and works to advance vegan interior design through education, advocacy, collaboration and industry engagement.
