What is the typical protocol for getting a taxi in Italy, assuming you're not in a place where they typically congregate (like a hotel or train station)? Can they be hailed on the street, are you expected to walk to a taxi stand, or must you request one by phone or internet?

I used the MyTaxi IT app to call taxis. It worked well in Florence and Rome, but not so well in smaller cities. It works like Uber, but it seemed to not know exactly where we were at times. We had a couple of interesting phone conversations with taxi drivers by phone, but eventually we got to our destinations.

Siena has a great system. They have a number (which I don't recall) to which one can send an SMS of your city and address. When we used it, a taxi appeared at our door in 5 minutes. We then told the taxi driver our destination.

Created in 2015, WeTaxi is one of the best taxi apps loved by Italians. It is an innovative network that lets you immediately find a taxi based on your geolocation. I have used this one on my recent trip to Turin and I loved it.

No matter where you are, the endeavor to get a taxi is pretty similar. So, the usual ways to get one are through car services, radio taxis, a taxi station, and hailing one that has its roof light on.

We are scheduled to debark at Fusina on August 22 with a fairly early return flight (11:00 AM). I called Azamara to inquire about the debarkation process at that port but the rep did not know. He could only guess about the availability of taxis. Not very helpful.

Have you already sailed, and if so what was your experience? Or if you haven't sailed yet, what have you learned?

Thank you very much.

Everybody else, including those who have booked land transport with Azamara for later flights, are bussed to Marritima Port where they collect their luggage. Those with Azamara land transport collect their luggage and I assume then get bussed to the airport. Those with independent travel collect their luggage at Marritima Port and have the option of taxi, water taxi, people mover etc based on plans.

If your flight is 11am I would try and arrange land transport with Azamara (assume you can use any OBC if you have it) or I would arrange for a taxi to collect me from Marritima and ask the ship for an early deprture

And yes it is the old Maritima Cruise terminal so that transport information is helpful as well cruisemom. It was just so different from the way it used to be - not a person in sight other that those few working there and us passengers. I will say again though that there were not water taxis waiting. Quite a few passengers from the cruise were, so hopefully it was easy for them as that is a great way to get into the heart of the city. It was the best way for us to arrive at the terminal for our departure as we were staying on the Lagoon area and getting to Palazzo with luggage would have been time consuming and a bit more difficult.

You are now able to book a taxi in Pisa on the SIXT app. Through a cooperation with local taxi companies in Pisa, you can order a taxi to a chosen address or your current location and be picked up in just a few minutes.

I just downloaded MyTaxi for android and started looking at all the reviews from this month. Yikes! Have you used this app yet this month? Will be in Rome in December and may need a taxi off and on. Little leary of this app.

When we left the secure area at the airport, we were immediately approached by a man claiming to be a taxi driver. We were exhausted and thought he was legitimate. When I asked him how much to the train station (I expected around $50 euros), he said it would be on a taxi meter. The man took us to an unmarked car with another driver waiting and we were driven to the train station. On arrival, the meter showed $170 euros! I paid him and turned my back to grab something I dropped. He then claimed I was $40 euros short. I begrudgingly paid it but later verified that he scammed me. Beware of unofficial taxis!

Getting around any city on taxi is not difficult, but you do have to know ahead of time that in Italy taxis cannot be flagged down as they pass you along the street! Taxis are instead "stationed" at special taxi parking stands in most of the major squares in any city and at the airport and they can be requested by phone. In Florence, the numbers for calling a taxi are: 055.4242 / 055.4390 / 055.4798 / 055.4499

If you are a woman out in the city center and have to get back to your hotel or apartment alone at night, take the taxi! Be safe and get a 10% discount off the fare if you travel alone between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m. - the discount isn't automatic, so ASK FOR IT!

Some of the companies operating in the Lake Como area also provide connections from/to Milan or Bergamo airports. If you wish to get to your accommodations by taxi, make sure to ask the receptionist (or your host) about the best way to organize your trip.

If you need a taxi in Bellagio or you are looking for a means of transport from and to the main airports in northern Italy, Autoservizi Colombo is pleased to help you offering comfortable transfer services by minibus and car hire with driver service.

Traditional water taxis in Venice have steps to get in and out of them (shown in the photo on the left). Accessible water taxis in Venice have a wheelchair lift to bring disabled passengers from the boat level up to the dock level (shown in the photo on the right):

A water taxi staff member will securely tie the boat to the dock (shown in the photo on the left). If you are arriving at a dock that is not level with the boat, they can help carry you off the boat (shown in the photo on the right). They can also assist you off the small platform lift into the covered area in the back of the boat.

Leave your car behind: from mid-March to the beginning of November, non-resident vehicles are not allowed on the island. That said, there is really no need to bring your car, as most roads are pedestrian and there is very little parking.

Public transportation on the island is easy and convenient, and there are always taxis available.

To visit the island of Capri, it is not necessary to have a car. Many distances can be easily covered on foot, alternatively there are several bus lines and the funicular that connects the port with the Piazzetta. If you prefer, you can move from one part of the island to another with one of the numerous taxis that serve Capri and Anacapri, or rent a scooter.

Capri is a small island, the distances between the various attractions are limited and it is easy to visit the historic center on foot. Furthermore, many streets are pedestrian, so there are no dangers related to car traffic. The only difficulty is that the streets are often sloping, sometimes with steps or ramps. For some, therefore, getting around Capri on foot can be tiring. The beaches and bathing establishments are further away from the inhabited centers and can be reached more easily by bus or taxi.

The historic centers of Capri and Anacapri are small and can be explored on foot without problems. The distances between the two municipalities, between the historic centers and the port or the main beaches, are a few km and, unless you are a trekking enthusiast, can be covered by bus, taxi or scooter.

Although the cheapest way to catch a cab is by waiting at the official taxi stops on the streets of Rome, it is also possible to reserve this type of transportation by telephone. These are some of the best taxi companies in the city:

We pick you up and drop you off. From the airport, the train station or the starting point of your mountain bike tour through the Dolomites: door-to-door, door-to-mountain and back. Our taxi and shuttle services are as flexible as they are reliable.

I would like to add that during those intense COVID times, taxis were absolutely SAFE -strictly regulated with plexi-screen protectors, drivers wearing masks, hand sanitizer, etc. And passengers were required to wear a mask, too!

Very nice blog Victoria! You cover all the important things to know and especially Taxi stand ediquette, which is very important to ensure you have good stories of your taxi ride to share with others!

However, there are cases when leaving a gratuity is absolutely appropriate, expected, and appreciated. Whether for an aperitivo and snacks in Venice, the services of a hotel porter or concierge in Rome, or a taxi ride from the airport in Milan, this guide covers whether you should tip in Italy, and, if so, how much to leave.

Official taxis in Naples are white and just like in other cities, you can catch a taxi from set stops or flag one down in the street. They use a meter, but be aware that there are a number of additional charges for various different extras.

They also have the symbol of Rome City Council on the front doors, in the form of a large sticker with the taxi rates against a dark red background and the official license plate and number at the back.

Taxi drivers in Rome may not refuse to provide service; they may carry only the number of passengers indicated on the registration card; they must apply the fare provided by the taximeter except for fixed-price routes; they must ask users to fasten their seat belts if they do not do so voluntarily.

Many people get confused about this and believe the taxi driver is trying to scam them with an additional cost. This may not be the case: before getting into a row with the driver, check if your location qualifies for the fixed rated.

Make sure you are at the agreed location when the taxi arrived: taxis usually pull over and expect you to be already there and ready to jump in. If they have tp wait, the meter will run and you will be charged for the extra time.

Just stand in line on the platform with all the official taxis and make yourself visible to one of the operators (they have badges): they will direct you to the first official taxi available suitable for your party. ff782bc1db
