Race 1 - 2017 - Hickory 500

In the media this week...

  • Vasili Mikhailov creates some buzz when Avtovaz hold an autograph signing in the city. He qualifies ninth overall which is a decent result for his talent.
  • Cannonball Malone is spoken about on local circuit TV, but not for good reasons: they've had to make two engine changes already and he qualifies 36th.
  • Urist Tannhauser and Wagner-Wartburg Racing have it spot on this week. Intuitive work with the setup gives them a big performance boost in the upcoming race, and he sits on pole as a result.
  • Winter McFish also has a very positive experience in practice and qualifying, only just losing out on pole position by a tiny margin. She will start second, which many feel is a huge result for the underdog.
  • Paul Puffin appears in a Wildlife Fund charity event in the center of Hickory. He qualifies in 13th, which can be considered a solid starting position for him.
  • Selina Spiders starts off the season with a bang - literally. Her engine blows in a spectacular spray of oil and smoke, leaving her extremely far down the order in 35th.
  • Flash Finley commits a rule violation in the pit as his team loses a tire across pit lane during a practice stop. The penalty, plus the disruption it caused to his setup time, will place him back in 39th.
  • Daniel Burman of Mobius Engineering has numerous fans waiting outside his garage and graciously receives them. This, coupled with a stellar time in qualifying, has set him up for a good race ahead. He will begin the race in 4th.

race 1 - The hickory 500 - 18 turns

Remember that each turn is 10 miles, and is represented by the skill being checked and the group of drivers being checked. With regards to groups, 1st - 7th is TOP, 8th - 19th is MIDDLE and 20th and below is BOTTOM.

Turn 1: SKILL - MIDDLE - Boothby (14th) powers past Puffin to take 13th place. Cucumbers Caulfield, sitting in 12th, makes a great push to take him to 5th.

Turn 2: REFLEX - BOTTOM - Garrad McKinley goes on a charge from 38th, eventually resting in 8th! It seems that 38th is a good place to be, as Ziskie seizes Garrad's momentum and moves up. Selenia Spiders begins her move after a disappointing qualifying, ending up leading the bottom group. Flamethrower takes 12th but loses it immediately to Ungar and drops to 14th. Corky Cadorkian shifts up to 16th. Fujiwara moves up to 17th position, and Egil Van Can rounds off an action packed section of the race with a push to 12th.

Turn 3: DUEL - TAMAURIA SPIDERS - Tamauria kicks off a duel against leader Urist Tannhauser. She wins the duel and forces Urist to use his performance boost from qualifying; which means that although he remains in first, he is now far more vulnerable than he was beforehand!

Turn 4: DUEL - TOM REYNOLDS - Seeing Urist almost lose out to Tamauria, Tom decides to go for a challenge for the lead (and therefore the bonus points! This time, the duel is successful, and there's nothing Urist can do. A radio burst from Urist complains of a clutch problem almost immediately after, and has to dive into the pits. After a lengthy fix, Tannhauser is able to continue: but will do so from 41st.

Turn 5: TV - MIDDLE - The TV list drivers Selenia and Vasili have a chance to shine. Vasili (10th) makes a good move up to 6th to push Cucumbers back a slot, but Selenia is unable to continue gaining ground.

Turn 6: STAR - MIDDLE - Egil van Can (11th) and Garrad McKinley (10th) team together to stop an ambitious move from Takumi Fujiwara, leaving him back in 16th when the dust settles. Another bout of defensive driving prevents moves up the field from Egil, Fred Orca (9th) and Victor Lucky (8th).

Turn 7: REFLEX - MIDDLE - van Can (11th) finally gets a move to stick and coasts nicely up to 4th place. Other than that, superb positions for the defending cars prevent any more movement into the top group. The quality of the drivers up there is showing.

Turn 8: STAR - TOP - van Can continues to try to force his way to the front, battling Tom Reynolds for the lead, but is unable to take the place or move further up from his 4th position.

Turn 9: PIT TURN - Boothby takes 12th with Selenia taking advantage of the change, moving to 13th. Randy and Lars have poor pits, putting them back to 19th and 18th. Extremely fast pitting from almost all of the top group gives key advantages to Winter McFish, Dominic Jackson, Daniel Burman and Egil van Can, with Tamauria (2nd) and Tom Reynolds (1st) further cementing their positions at the front.

Turn 10: SMART - BOTTOM - Urist Tannhauser sees his opportunity with slower cars ahead and forces his way through the pack, making a huge jump up to 9th over these ten miles. He is followed by Flash Finley, who takes tenth. Airen Slipper is forced back into the bottom group by these changes but seizes the opportunity, using the swapping, ducking and diving to take 12th.

Turn 11: TV - MIDDLE - Selenia, Flash and Urist all have chances to shift up. Urist makes the most of the opportunity but it's just not meant to be, with Daniel Burman (6th) keeping him solidly in place.

Turn 12: HEAT - TOP - It's Egil time! Except, it would be, but Tom Reynolds is able to use one of his two performance boosts to again frustrate the independent driver.

Turn 13: TROUBLE - BOTTOM - This is not what you want to see for the largest group of the race! Fujiwara and Flamethrower have a fairly innocuous coming together, but it's the knock on effect as car after car after car is collected in the crash. All in all, TWELVE cars are unable to escape the chaos. As pit crews scramble to salvage whatever possible from the cars involved, those that managed to escape it will be extremely thankful.

Turn 14: YELLOW FLAG TURN - Flamethrower's car is nearly in half, and is out of the race, but the other instigator (Fujiwara) manages to wobble back onto track after some repairs. It's clear from the wreckage that Lem Tables, Manne Love, Sweet Clyde and Ben Stover are also at the end of their racing day.

Turn 15: YELLOW FLAG TURN - despite some attempted heroics from the pit crews, it becomes apparent that Max von Passum, Rain Winterson, Fireplug Fitzpatrick and Lars Ungar are also out of the race as their problems simply cannot be fixed. The bottom group is now, from 32nd to 20th, Violet; Leapfrog; Takumi; Brick; Roseburg; Malone; Shelton; Walker; Salad; Elford; Ziskie; A. Stover; Puffin.

Turn 16: GREEN FLAG RACING - DUEL - MIDDLE - Victor Lucky (13th) attempts to get a quick start when we get back to green flag racing. However, the car was clearly not ready for it, and he almost loses the back end into the barrier. Fortunately for him, disaster is averted, but he gains nothing from it. Airen Slipper (12th), sat next to him, sees Victor make a move and follows him in case of opportunity. His attempt to take on Cucumbers Caulfield directly (8th) works, and Airen takes the place!

Turn 17: STAR - BOTTOM - Takumi Fujiwara (30th) shows his class and cleanly (this time!) pulses up to eighth place. Emil Ziskie (22nd) moves up into the points, taking 17th. The only remaining Stover Racing Development car, #30, takes 19th from Selenia Spiders.

Turn 18: CONTROL - TOP - It's last gasp time! Vasili fails to move up, Daniel Burman (6th) forces every inch of performance out of Dominic Jackson and gets nowhere. Tamauria, with only a few more corners to go, attempts to take on Reynolds for the lead, but Reynolds is a superb defensive driver and is able to defend the place, even with the Spider Sister forcing him to use up his performance chips.
