How Does Science Preserve the Environment?

Science and environment are closely related to each other, as the first one is related to knowledge gained through ages and the latter is related to preserving the nature that is most important for life on the planet.

So, could these two things go together?

For development, a country needs industries and increases the production of consumer goods, but it is learned that the development projects are executed at the cost of nature. For example, large scale devastation of Sundarbans is a case available for study. But thanks to non-profit organizations like the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) that have saved Sundarbans from further destruction.

Who are these non-profit groups working in the field of nature?

Take CSE for study. Founded in 1980, it is the biggest think tank of government and its prime job is to advise the government on policy matters like development issues, poor planning, climate shifts, and devastating the nature reserves. It guides science and technology in India towards the right development goal that is preserving nature.

Is there a need for these non-profit groups?

Let’s do a case study of a knowledge-based company that has developed a new technique of increasing production in a specific sector. The company wants to set its plant at a geo-location of its choice, and it ignores the natural setting of that area just for profit or development. Since the company isn’t willing to study the impact of its industry on nature, a non-profit group conducts the study and prepares a detailed report of its findings for the consideration of the company and the government.

The biggest objective of CSE is to educate the country about its nature reserves that shouldn’t be impacted by technology innovation in India. It works like the eyes of the government. It sees how nature reserves are preserved and indicates nature reserves for preservation to support flora and fauna in those reserves.

Are nature organizations heard?

A history of CSE tells that the institute has won many awards and recognition from the government of India and international bodies. And these awards prove that its voice is heard. And that speaks loud enough to be heard by everyone.

It is CSE that guides India's technology and innovation so that the development becomes nature-friendly. The objective of this group is to take India ahead on the path of development without disturbing the fine balance between nature and development.
