Founded by Mehmed II on May 30, 1453, a day after the conquest of Constantinople by the Turks,[3] it was reformed in 1846 as the first Ottoman higher education institution based on European traditions.[4][5] The successor institution, which has been operating under its current name since 1933, is the first university in modern Turkey.[6] Some pre-1930 Western sources refer to it as the University of Constantinople, after the previous name of the city,[7] while one in French referred to it as the Universit de Stamboul ("Stamboul" the name for the historic inner city).[8]

Origins of Istanbul University go back to 1453,[14][3] when it was founded by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II "as a school of philosophy, medicine, law and letters".[14] There was also the University of Constantinople, which was founded in 425 and rebranded as Phanar Greek Orthodox College after the Fall of Constantinople. Istanbul University functioned as a Medrese (Islamic theological school) as well. This madrasa is regarded as the precursor to the Darlfnn (technical institute or university. Literally: House of Natural Sciences), which evolved into Istanbul University in 1933.[15] Education in a number of sciences and fields (such as medicine, mathematics, astronomy, cartography, geography, history, philosophy, religion, literature, philology, law, etc.) became available, and, until the 19th century, they were instrumental in educating the ruling cadres of the Ottoman society. However, when the medreses were no longer able to meet the needs of the modern world, a restructuring process began, and as a result, the institutions of higher education called Darlfnn, the core of Istanbul University, was established.

This new ranking system reports the status of 1220 universities from all over the world. They were selected from a population of more than 3000 universities. At this stage, all universities with at least 1500 WoS articles during 2014-2016 were considered. This is important since it allows for comparison of universities of similar size.

Through this ranking system, universities can receive invaluable information about their general performance as well as their performance in each criterion as they can compare their performance with other universities over the globe. This latter possibility can be used efficiently in policy making so as to enhance the status of each university within each country, each region or over the globe.

Besides this new service, ISC continuously analyzes the performance of different universities and submits consultancy reports with the objective to accelerate the rate of improvement of each university. To avail themselves of this opportunity, universities may contact ISC through info@isc.gov.ir after which the necessary steps and formalities will be communicated. In what follows a brief account of the performance of the OIC region and Istanbul University is provided:

From among all OIC universities from 57 OIC countries, 99 universities (from 15 countries) are present in ISC World University Rankings 2018. Table 1 shows the list of universities from each OIC country along with their status in this ranking system.

ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering takes pride in having close to 100 years of Mechanical Engineering tradition, and has currently 33 Professors, 12 Associate Professors, 24 Assistant Professors and 15 Lecturers as Faculty members. At present, we have over 2000 undergraduate students, all of which were selected among the top ~0.5% of the ~2.3 million students taking the nationwide university entrance exam annually.

Founded in 1933, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering received its current name in 1944. With the university reform in 1933, the Institute of Electricity and Machines of the Istanbul University was replaced by the Electro-Mechanic Department; and by doing so our Mechanical Engineering education, which still continues, began 87 years ago. 11 years later in 1944, the name of the institution was changed to Istanbul Technical University and under it a separate school/college of Mechanical Engineering was founded with the current name: Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

Our faculty is one of the oldest institutions in our country that carries out education and research activities in the field of mechanical engineering. The different engineering branches it hosts have developed and become a faculty. in 1969; Faculty of Naval Architecture and Marine Sciences, in 1983; The Faculty of Textile Technologies and Design and the Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics gained their independent status. In the first years, the Mining Engineering department, which was part of the basic sciences and general engineering courses instruct within the scope of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, became an independent faculty in 1953.

ITU Faculty of Mechanical Engineering performs research and education in the design, development and production planning of all types of mechanical and energy transformation systems. Our 75 Faculty members are performing research and development in a wide range of areas related to both immediate needs of the industry and also cutting edge science for future technologies and applications. Our research areas include, but not limited to, Automotive Industry, Petrochemical Industry, Robotics, Textile Industry, Defense Industry, Reverse Engineering, Clean Energy, Renewable Energy, Underground Gasification, MEMS, Nanotechnology, Pharmaceutics, and Biomolecular Engineering.

With its gorgeous Ottoman era building providing extensive lab space, massive laboratory and research investment performed in the past 87 years, and the recent addition of the 1500 m2 big Dr. Keskin Keser student lab building, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering has one of the most extensive educational and research laboratories in Turkey and provides its students with top quality Mechanical Engineering education in a gorgeous historical building located at a prime location in the very heart of Istanbul.

U-Multirank's unique 'Sunburst chart' gives an illustration of a university's performance profile across the five U-Multirank dimensions. These are indicated in different colours. For instance, the teaching and learning dimension is symbolised by the colour green. Each 'sunray' represents one of the thirty plus U-Multirank indicators. The longer the ray, the better the performance of an institution on the selected indicator: a full-length ray stands for 'top group' performance, whereas a short ray means 'weak' performance. A missing sunray indicates that the specific data indicator is not available. An institution's performance in an indicator can be identified by moving the cursor over the rays. A key guard for the sunburst chart is provided here .

This study aims at examining the contamination of coliform bacteria, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Vibrio vulnificus, and Vibrio cholerae, which carry extremely serious risks to the consumer health, in 700 seafood belonging to 4 different (raw sea fish, raw mussels, raw shrimp, and raw squid) categories. The total number of samples was determined as 700. When the obtained results were viewed in total, they were found to be 48.14%, 18.71%, 8.57%, and 3.42% for coliform bacteria, E. coli, L. monocytogenes, and V. vulnificus, respectively. V. cholerae, one of the factors studied, was not found. Conventional microbiological cultivation methods were used in the analysis stage as well as the real-time PCR method. This study aims at making a risk ranking modeling for consumer health based on product category and pathogens by interpreting the results of the analysis with statistical methods. According to the statistical analysis, significantly binary correlations were determined among some parameters that stimulate one another for reproducing. In the light of the obtained results of the study, it has been concluded that the studies of the most detailed examinations of the microbiological risks associated with seafood, forms of microbial pollution and microorganisms that cause deterioration in seafood and threaten consumer health and the path that their epidemiologies follow, are of primary importance to both protecting consumer health and obtaining safe and quality seafood. ff782bc1db
