Wittgenstein and Idealism

André Porto

My presentation will be about Wittgenstein’s stance towards idealism and the modern philosophy of subjectivity in general. Contrary to a widespread understanding, we will argue two points in our exposition. We shall argue that Wittgenstein’s mature philosophy should not be viewed as being really opposed to idealism and the philosophy of subjectivity, and that his early idealism, running from the Tractatus all the way to his middle period, is crucial to a proper construal of his latter philosophy and his famous “Private Language Argument”.
