You were lucky in that you could actually log into the machine, I was completely locked out of my host machine and had to boot into a linux live usb. The 'enhanced keyboard' passes key combinations such as 'ctl-alt-del' to VMs in Workstation. That's a great feature, unless you happen to be on a domain that requires you to login. It becomes an issue because your host machine will never receive the 'ctl-alt-del' to allow you to login. From anything. No RDP, no enter-pssession, no invoke-command from powershell can be used even if they were all able to be used before. This is what I'm hoping VMWare can address in future iterations. Perhaps load the driver only when with VMWare Workstation pro is running, then unloading on shutdown. Not sure what you'd need to do, but that's a show stopper. I'm about to run through the install again, and see if you actual warn about it (you might, and I just didn't pay attention).

At this point, I was able to use a keyboard connected to the phone to control the Windows 7 host. (Note that I was using Samsung DeX station with my phone, and had an external keyboard/mouse, monitor, local ethernet connected. I'm sure this isn't required, but sure made it easier - thanks Samsung!). Next:

After that I started up my vm and did some work in IDEA. Shortly after I edited some code at once a whole line got erased instead of just 1 click on the remove key. You could literally see the line beeing draged leftwards and dissapear letter by letter.... At first I was ok... well.. wtf... after 2 mins the same again. I rebooted my laptop and restarted my work. Suddenly after 4 mins the whole system removes line by line and this time it even didnt let me use my own keyboard anymore... didnt stop... and tried to delete further even after the code file was already empy (thanks git... no worries here ). Also the whole system hung without beeing able to press any key - only way out was a complete hard reset of the hardware.

Honestly, I have never understood exactly what concrete benefits the so-called "enhanced keyboard driver" produces, at least I have not found any particularly relevant ones that would justify its installation. Never installed and will continue not to install "that driver".

After working for a few minutes (< 5min), the keyboard (*not* the enhanced keyboard driver) just stopped working in an Ubuntu 22.04 guest OS. Host is Windows 11 Pro on Dell XPS 15. This happened to a colleague of mine, too, so it's unlikely to be tied to a particular user's configuration (though we do have the same model host machines).

I can ssh to the guest so I know it's running just fine. The clock updates, too, so the UI itself is running. If I reboot the host+guest, the keyboard comes back for a few minutes then dies again. So this is probably a guest tools problem. I've got the latest installed via `apt`. I get the status messages about using Ctrl+G and Alt+Ctrl, but no luck actually typing into the guest VM through the UI.

Same issues, input seems to suddenly stop on the VM but network connectivity continues working. I had several Linux installs just hang today in the Workstation window, while I could ssh into them and try to debug within. They seemed to be running just fine otherwise. Only way I could get the input back was to restart the VM. Completely uninstalled 17.5.5 and restarted the OS (Win11, btw). Reinstalled 17.0.2, skipping the enhanced kb driver, and things have been flawlessly stable since. I guess I'll wait for the 17.5.1 build

in my case after removing of the driver and a complete re-install of Workstation 17.5. the problem went away. However, I'm not using the "native" virtualization of Workstation but the HyperV one as I have podman running on my windows 10 host OS.

WOW unbelievable 17.5.0 broke all if my VMs. I tried reinstalling like four times, tried to remove the keyboard driver but the issue is not just the keyboard. Everything stops and freezes, all my Linux VMs are dead. Is there an official fix form VMware or all is downhill now with Boradcom? Pretty sad and disappointing.

The driver is installed in my host, and does hook into the standard keyboard driver chain. This does sound a little scary to me, knowing Microsoft's habit to change Windows internals at will and not caring too much wether competing products are broken or not. So if the driver doesn't do any good for me, I'd rather not install it.

The docs do say, thet the driver does "somehow" do "something" good for foreign language keyboards. Well, I have a foreign language keyboard (German), in fact I have plenty of them (very basic ones as well as "Multimedia" keyboards with tons of special keys, mainly made by Microsoft and Logitech, but also other brands), and I have never noticed any difference between hosts with and without the Enhanced Keyboard Driver.

This may be caused by the fact that I hardly ever use any "Enhanced" functionality inside a VM, but I notice that many special keys like volume controls, Windows key, Alt-Gr key work regardless of whether I install teh Enhanced Keboard driver or not.

> and what kind of malfunction I will experience if I don't install it?

I do not install the "enhanced keyboard driver" since it was added. This driver requires a reboot after install and I also do not know what it really is good for.

I recommend not to install it - if you ever come across a function that requires this driver you can install it later.

In other words - dont worry - do nothing !

Because it processes raw keyboard input as soon as possible, the enhanced virtual keyboard feature also offers security improvements by bypassing Windows keystroke processing and any malware that is not already at a lower layer. When you use the enhanced virtual keyboard feature, only the guest operating system acts when you press Ctrl+Alt+Delete

Upon imaging a Surface Laptop 2 with our basic image from the older Surface laptop model the Surface Hid Mini Driver driver fails to power and thus the keyboard doesn't work. if I revert back to 03/27/2017 driver it works fine... but then the laptop automatically updates itself to the latest version that brakes again. I have blocked the update in WSUS.

Is anybody aware of a fix for the latest driver? Does the PC somehow think its a Surface Laptop 1st gen and somehow downloading the incorrect driver possibly? I also downloaded the latest firmware/driver package from MS and tried that version and it also doesn't work. Seems to be the same exact version that gets downloaded from Windows Update.

@WC_KStil did you ever get the specific version of the driver that works? I keep running into this issue every update cycle. I have a surface laptop 2 and the "Surface Hid Mini Driver" flakes out every update. I've tried the all of the drivers from Download Surface Laptop 2 Drivers and Firmware from Official Microsoft Download Center :

I've tried uninstalling the driver and re-installing but that never seems to work, even disabling the driver and re-enabling doesn't work. I'm not sure what happens in UEFI entry, but that seems to make it work again for me. Beware - your mileage may vary!!! This seems to be a very common issue but different tasks seem to work for different people. I sure hope Microsoft can fix this as it is a pain as it usually happens when I really need to get some work done!

thanks for your quick reply IIIaass. I have downloaded all the windows support drivers from bootcamp assistant but nothing seems to be working, reinstalled, repaired the drivers etc. it says 'driver error' could you send a link to correct driver for wireless keyboard. Maybe, it is the driver!

I installed bootcamp the both to a mac mini, and everything works fine there (wireless keyboard too), but for the installation onto a macpro late 2013 everything works fine, WI-FI, GPU, wireless mouse, BT, etc. all of the drivers are OK, with the exception of the wireless keyboard where the bluetooth manager says: Driver Error.

You have to go to "Device Manager" (right click on Start: Device Manager option), at the HID leaf (that stands open 'cause of a driver error), simply uninstall and delete the wrong driver. Magically everything works fine, and the wireless keyboard will be reported on the Keyboards leaf of the Device Manager.

This didn't work for me. I have exactly the same problem. It says "driver error" for the keyboard, while the magic mouse works fine. If I delete the driver, it shows a "System Administrator's Keyboard" is connected with bluetooth, but the keyboard still doesn't work.

Open Control Panel, under the Clock, Language and Region heading click Change input methods, you should see your language, click on Options, in the Input method section you should see two entries, remove one and keep Italian as the primary input. Also, Press the shift key on the keyboard and then the "" keys and check if it helps.

In Device Manager, uninstall and reinstall the keyboard software:

In Windows, search for and open Device Manager.

Click View and select Show Hidden Devices.

Click the arrow next to Keyboards, right-click the keyboard device name, then select Uninstall to remove the device from Windows.

Continue removing device names in the Keyboards category until all device names have been uninstalled.

Restart the notebook. Right-click Start (), select Shut down or sign out, then select Restart.

Wait for the computer to restart and open Windows.

Ok @MrRobot , but use the on screen keyboard is not very useful... The last time HP had reported my pc, had also sent me the usb to restore my PC. Do you think that with this usb could fix something, or it's not worthwhile to format the pc from the beginning? (Because I've already done it with the recovery manager).

The keyboard does definitely send the "CTRL RIGHT" key value. This does not surprise me, because in most keyboard layouts the key to the right of the "ALT GR" is indeed the CTRL RIGHT. But not on this Italian keyboard layout. There the key on that position is marked > by holding the shift)
