Route description:
Start by climbing to the false summit (lookout) of Mount Wells and then onwards to its real summit. From there, it's mostly downhill through the forest on some lesser known trails to Awsworth Road. Beyond the yellow gate, this road becomes more trail-like, leading to the base of Flatty Hill. The climb up is steep but worth it for the views. After dropping down the other side, it's a slightly different route to climb up and over Mount Wells again and down to Humpback Road. Here, hop on the Sooke Flowline, which parallels the road and then crosses it to carry you to the base of Mount McDonald. Another steep climb awaits, with this one requiring the use of ropes (provided) to haul yourself up one section. After the false summit (lookout), the route carries on to the fenced-in radio towers (true summit). Bomb down the access road until it starts to climb and find the trail on the lefthand side of the road that leads to John Peak. Turn around when you reach the peak (stick) and then retrace your steps all the way back to Flowline. Follow the concrete tunnel back to the base of Mount Wells and then follow the trail back to parking lot where you began.
