ISHPMIE
ISHPMIE is an international biennial conference series aiming at the advancing the prevention and mitigation of industrial explosions. The conference brings together academia and industry experts and the program will include high-level presentations from both perspectives.
The first ISHPMIE was organised in Bergen, Norway, in 1996, followed by Schaumburg, USA (1998), Tsukuba, Japan (2000), Bourges, France (2002), Cracow, Poland (2004), Halifax, Canada (2006), St. Petersburg, Russia (2008), Yokohama, Japan (2010), Cracow, Poland (2012), Bergen, Norway (2014), Dalian, China (2016), Kansas City, USA (2018), Braunschweig, Germany (2020, online event), Braunschweig, Germany (2022), Naples, Italy (2024), and Kaohsiung, Taiwan (2026).The 2028 event is organized by WPI and FM and will be held at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), in Worcester, MA, with excursions to the new FM Global Research Campus as part of the event.
The technical program will cover fundamental studies, experimental and computational modeling, prevention and mitigation technologies, risk assessment, standards, and lessons learned from actual incidents. applications.
Topics will include:
Case histories and accident investigations
Gas, dust, hybrid, spray, mist, and vapor-cloud explosions
Flame propagation, acceleration, detonation, and DDT
Ignition, extinction, flammability, and inerting
Release and dispersion
Explosion venting, suppression, isolation, and prevention
Runaway reactions and reactive materials
Risk assessment, consequence analysis, codes, and standards
Hydrogen, ammonia, and alternative fuels
Batteries, thermal runaway, and energy-storage systems
Aerospace, propulsion, and space-related explosion hazards
Experimental diagnostics, modeling, artificial intelligence, and data-driven methods
ISHPMIE 2028 will bring the international explosion-protection community to Worcester Polytechnic Institute, founded in 1865. For more than 160 years, WPI has united scientific theory with practical innovation—a tradition reflected in the achievements of pioneering alumnus Robert H. Goddard, the father of modern rocketry, and continued today through WPI’s Master of Science in Explosion Protection Engineering (XPE), the first program of its kind in the United States.
Worcester is also a vibrant college city, home to nine colleges and universities and more than 36,000 students. Alongside WPI are UMass Medical School, Clark University, the College of the Holy Cross, Assumption University, Worcester State University, and other distinguished institutions. This concentration of universities, medical research, engineering, and the arts gives Worcester an energetic, international, and intellectually engaging character.
Planned for October 15–20, 2028 and scheduled to coincide with WPI’s fall break, the conference will take place during one of New England’s most beautiful seasons, when the campus and surrounding hills are filled with brilliant red, orange, and gold foliage. Crisp autumn air, pumpkins, Halloween traditions, apple cider, and maple candy will provide a memorable seasonal setting. Visitors can explore the Worcester Art Museum and its nearly 40,000 works of art, attend a performance at historic Mechanics Hall, enjoy boating and rowing on Lake Quinsigamond, or hike through forests and scenic trails at Wachusett Mountain. Together, WPI, Worcester, and the surrounding New England landscape will make ISHPMIE 2028 not only an outstanding international technical conference, but also an unforgettable autumn experience.
ISHPMIE 2028 is proudly co-hosted by WPI and FM. FM traces its roots to 1835, when Rhode Island mill owner and inventor Zachariah Allen advanced the pioneering idea that property losses could be prevented through engineering, research, and practical risk reduction. This scientific tradition was later strengthened by Howard W. Emmons, a pioneer of modern fire science and an important supporter of WPI’s Fire Protection Engineering program, who helped establish a fire research laboratory at the Factory Mutual Research Corporation (FMRC), where full-scale experiments could be used to validate fire science theory. That legacy continues at FM’s nearby Research Campus in West Glocester, Rhode Island, a world-renowned center for large-scale research into fire, explosions, natural hazards, and industrial resilience. WPI and FM look forward to welcoming you to Worcester for an inspiring week of scientific exchange, new friendships, and warm New England hospitality
