Screen Time and How it Affects Us
Written by Keosha
Excessive screen time is an everyday concern, especially in modern households. However, it has been an omnipresent part of modern life. From the smartphones in our pocket to the computers on our desks and the TV in our living rooms. There has been a talk about excessive screen time and its effect on our physical, and mental well-being. As our daily use of screens continue to rise, it is very important to understand the complex ways this digital habit is shaping our lives. From the risks of excessive screen time, to how it affects our well-being. This article will dive deep into the risks of excessive screen time such as its impact on our physical and mental well-being.
Excessive screen time and its impact on our Physical well-being:
The risks of excessive screen time on our physical well-being are innumerable; with the most common being eyestrain neck, shoulder pain, and back pain mainly resulting in a “Hunch Back.”
They also include headaches, blurred vision (which is the reason why most people get glasses nowadays). Also including dry eyes because when we blink, we are watering our eyes. But when we are looking at a screen, we tend not to blink. This results in dry eyes, which well, isn’t so good unless you’ve always dreamt of going to surgery.
Excessive screen time and its impact our Mental well-being:
The risks of excessive screen time on our mental health are the fact that excessive screen time can have a harmful effect on people’s mental well-being, especially on young people. Studies from the National Library of Medicine have shown strong relations between excessive screen time and elevated levels of depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders.
They also limit face-to-face relations which is not good for a person’s well-being. It’s because we are social beings that require social interactions to thrive. A lack of such interactions mainly leads to sadness and loneliness.
In conclusion, the effect of screen time on us is a complex issue. While devices can help us do our homework and be productive, excessive use of screens has many negative well-being outcomes. My key takeaway is, after every 45 min of screen time, take a 15 min break that way you can balance your screen time. In that 15 min of break, you can do so many things! You can do your hobbies, go out for a walk, talk with your family, and so much more! 😊
