The Secret to YUMMY Brownies
By: Ashvica Yadav
Edition 14 is the last edition of the 2025-26 academic year. See you next year!
Have you ever tried a random recipe online, only to have it fail? Or just tried and tried baking, only to give up? Well, I was like that once too, until one of my Spanish formative experiences. We had to cook something, so my friend and I decided to bake brownies. This is where I realised how good homemade brownies taste and just how fun and (kinda) simple it is to make them. Now let me let you in on the secret recipe…
REASONS WHY YOU WILL LOVE THESE BROWNIES!
It has a rich chocolate flavour combined with melted butter and cocoa powder that makes it delicious!
It has crispy edges that make everyone want to fight for them.
It’s also very easy to make, even if you are a beginner!
First, let’s start with the ingredients. It might seem like a lot, but once you read through it, you'll probably find most of them in your kitchen.
INGREDIENTS:
For the chocolate Brownie:
½ cup butter
1 cup white sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
½ cup all-purpose flour
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon baking powder
(OPTIONAL)For the chocolate frosting:
3 tablespoons butter, softened
3 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1 tablespoon honey
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup icing sugar
MATERIALS:
Measuring cups
Tablespoon
Teaspoon
If this is your first time baking, I suggest you get prepared, as this recipe might take time and create a bit of a mess. When my friend and I did it, the kitchen was questionable, there was salt on the floor and chocolate on the carpet. But to be honest, I did it with someone (and doing it with someone always creates a mess in my opinion), but it also makes it more fun, so I suggest you try it with someone, no matter who it is, friends, family, or neighbours. Now for the actual recipe!!
YOU CAN DO THIS!!!
Steps for the Brownie:
Preheat the oven to 175 degrees Celsius.
Grease and flour a baking pan. You can do this by melting butter and spreading it over the baking pan, and then adding flour on top. This ensures the brownies don’t stick and are easy to remove. You can also add baking paper and leave it hanging over the sides if you want to make it even easier to lift out of the pan (optional).
Melt 1/2 cup butter in a large saucepan.
Remove from heat, and stir in sugar, eggs, and 1 teaspoon vanilla.
Beat in 1/3 cup cocoa, flour, salt, and baking powder.
Mix everything together until smooth, but don’t overmix it because it can result in tough brownies.
Spread batter into the prepared pan. Distribute the batter evenly for uniform brownies.
Bake in the preheated oven until the top is dry and the edges have started to pull away from the sides of the pan, about 25 to 30 minutes. Don’t overbake! You want them fudgy, not dry. To make sure they are fully baked, you can also poke a toothpick into them and see if it’s cooked. Don’t open the oven door too often because it can cause the brownies to sink.
The frosting is completely optional, but it adds an extra chocolatey taste to the brownies and makes them even tastier!
Steps for the Frosting:
Let the brownies cool a bit before frosting. This prevents the frosting from melting completely and becoming a puddle.
To make the chocolate frosting:
Combine softened butter, sugar, 3 tablespoons cocoa, honey, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract in a bowl.
Stir until smooth. The honey and sugar can be added to the amounts you find suitable, to make it sweeter or neutral.
You can apply the frosting on the brownie using frosting tools and make it fancy, or you can just apply the frosting with a spoon or knife.
Optional Variations:
You can use the same recipe, but instead of a baking pan, use a cupcake pan to make brownies shaped like cupcakes.
You can add additional ingredients to suit your taste, like chocolate chips, nuts, or coffee powder.
You can enjoy the brownies with ice cream, chocolate sauce, powdered sugar, or a cup of coffee or tea as well, which takes the brownies to another level.
Hope you enjoyed making this recipe and succeeded!
