During the Arab conquest of Alexandria in the 7th century CE, the Library of Alexandria was burnt down. Hundreds of thousands of ancient records, manuals, and documents were lost to time. However, even hundreds of years after the tragedy, many more situations of a similar degree have occurred. Similar misfortunes can be seen in the life of the famous Joachim Meyer.
Joachim Meyer was one of fencing's great masters, with a massive collection of manuals and manuscripts on the art of fencing. His most famous work is the Gründtliche Beschreibung der Kunst des Fechtens, or “A Foundational Description of the Art of Fencing” in English. The book was a manual about the fencing knowledge Meyer had gained from his profession of “free fencing”. Now, these works essentially serve to show readers the fundamentals of fencing.
Furthermore, Meyer made many more manuscripts and books on fencing, which go into more specific and advanced techniques. Thus, it can be speculated that he knew many great and advanced fencing techniques as a professional free fencer. However, he was never really able to share them with the public since he was actually dirt poor. For a good portion of his life, Meyer was indebted to the Swiss government. This led to Meyer focusing on his job as a free fencer more than writing books. Furthermore, advanced fencing books would not make nearly as much as books that teach the fundamentals, thus he wasn't able to produce any manuals with advanced techniques.
However, once he paid his debts off, his situation was no better. This is because even though after he had paid off his debts in 1571, he had tried writing more manuals, but he passed away before he could finish any work. It can only be speculated what great teachings Meyer could have published for the masses, as he was one of the best German-Swiss fencers in history. If it weren't for his sudden death, he could have taught the art and mastery of fencing to hundreds of thousands of people.
In conclusion, Joachim Meyer was one of the greats of fencing. He wrote one of the most detailed books about fencing that goes in-depth about its fundamentals. However, he was never really able to publish anything that went into further detail and advancement due to his debts, and when he finally paid them off, he met his untimely demise. Thus, the advanced works of Joachim Meyer were lost to time, forever gone.
Overall, the loss of Meyer’s media is truly saddening, and it can be considered the burning of the Library of Alexandria of Fencing.
