The ISD Newspaper Club is all about expressing yourself as a writer. Anything that you wanna write about, the ISD Chronicles is the perfect place to publish it. There are a lot of genres that people write about, such as cooking, reviews, art, gaming, latest trends, psychology, general knowledge, etc. Now, how does it work?
In the ISD Chronicles, there are two groups of people: the Writers and the Editors. Writers usually have around 2 weeks (or longer) to write an article, while Editors give feedback and make corrections. The Editors also write their own articles and review each other’s work within the team.
Afterwards, Editors(Layouters) publish the articles into the ISD Chronicles and even add changes to the site layout. As a matter of fact, even teachers love adding edits to The Writers and they also spend time contributing to refining the articles and refurbishing the Website.
Now how do I get started in making an article? Here are some ground rules that should be followed to help others read your article better and make it look more appealing.
#Rule 1: When you’re making an article, make sure to add a cover image that is relevant to the article itself. It saves so much time for the Layouters because then, they do not have to find a relevant picture themselves. By creating/finding a picture relevant to your article that you think best suits it is the best of both worlds.
#Rule 2: Word count should be around 500 or above. This makes sure your article is more descriptive and interesting to read. The more information you add to your article, the clearer it becomes for your readers to get what you are writing about. Note that this rule is not applied to Art or Recipe Articles.
#Rule 3: Font Rules. Font size should be 11, 12, or 13 so that the reader can read it clearly. Font plays a big role in your reader’s attention on reading your article to make it worthwhile. The ISD Chronicles only accepts fonts that are easy to read, clear and clean, and are considered professional such as:
Arial
Dosis
Barlow Semi Condensed/Barlow Condensed
Times New Roman
Bellefair
Baskerville
Droid Serif
(Note that ISD Chronicles doesn’t accept fonts like Comic Sans, Alex Brush or other ‘showy/childish’ fonts or any font that is difficult to read or understand.)
#Rule 4: Your article should be on a google doc with the article set to ‘Anyone with the link can edit’ or ‘International School Delft’. Remember to check your Outlook as you would be receiving many comments/feedback from Editors regarding your article. There is also a group document that is going to be shared with you when you join the club and you will have to attach the link to your article.
#Rule 5: Your articles should preferably have indents at the start of each paragraph. This can be done by pressing ‘Tab’ or →| on your keyboard. Only one indent is required.
#Rule 6: MLA 9 citations are necessary when it comes to researching for an article. Citations give credit to where the information was found or other articles that inspired you to write your article. Citations also verify the validity of the information found and question if it is a reliable source or not. These citations should be done in MLA9 and there is a guide that can be found in the MRC website or by plugging it in and double-checking the citation using Mybib.
#Rule 7: Add a relevant title of the article, your name and the class you are from. ISD Chronicles doesn’t want any articles made by anonymous people that aren’t even from this school to begin with!
Thank you for reading this article. I hope you have learned the 7 rules of Writing for The Chronicles and I look forward to seeing you write articles for us in the near future!
