Draw It This Way
How to Draw a Flamingo!
By Leoni van Pomeren
Edition 14 is the last edition of the 2025-26 academic year. See you next year!
Drawing a flamingo can be fun and simple when you take it one step at a time. This tutorial will guide you through all the steps you need to create your own flamingo. Don’t worry about making it perfect, just enjoy the process and watch as your flamingo comes to life!
Step 1: Draw the Body
1
Start by drawing a large semi-circle near the middle of your page. This will be the flamingo’s body.
Step 2: Draw the Neck
2
From the left side of the body, draw a long curved line going upward in an S-like shape.
3
Then, draw a second line next to it to give the neck some thickness.
Step 3: Draw the Head
4
At the top of the neck, draw a small oval for the head. Make sure it connects smoothly to the neck.
Step 4: Add the Eye and Beak
5
Draw a small circle inside the head for the eye.
6
Then draw the beak coming out from the front of the head. Start with a triangle-like shape and curve the tip slightly downward. Add a line across it to separate the top and bottom parts.
Step 5: Draw the Legs
7
Under the body, draw a small curved triangle shape where the legs will begin.
8
From there, draw two straight parallel lines going down for the first part of the front leg.
9
Next, draw two more parallel lines starting from behind the body. Angle these backward for the second leg.
10
Add a small oval on each leg to show the joint.
11
Continue the front leg straight down.
12
Then, continue the second leg by angling it forward so it crosses behind the first leg.
13
At the bottom, draw two curved feet and add a few jagged lines to show the toes.
Step 6: Draw the Wing
14
On the side of the body, draw a curved, rounded shape for the wing. Try to connect it naturally to the base of the leg.
15
Add a few jagged lines along the edge of the wing to show feathers.
Step 7: Draw the Tail
16
At the back of the body, draw a curved line going downward.
17
Then draw another curved line coming down from the wing to meet it.
18
Add some small jagged lines at the end to show the tail feathers.
Step 8: Outline and Clean Up
19
Go over your drawing and adjust any lines so the shapes look smooth and connected.
20
Then use a black pen to carefully trace over all the lines you want to keep.
21
Once the ink is dry, gently erase any pencil lines or sketch marks you don’t need anymore.
Step 9: Colour
22. You can colour your flamingo as follows:
Head And Body
Coral Pink
Legs, feet and joints
light pink or beige for the legs and feet, with joints in red or dark pink.
Beak
shaded dark grey, with the top left white.
Wings
beige as the main color, with a small patch of red or dark pink near the top or side of the wing. You can add some small lines to look like feathers.
Great job! You’ve drawn your very own flamingo. Now it’s time to get creative. Try experimenting with different colours, add water around your flamingo, or even draw plants, clouds, or a sunset to make your scene come alive. Remember, every drawing gets better with practice, so keep trying, be patient, and let your imagination guide you!
