Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a technology that enables machines to mimic human actions and decision-making processes. AI can analyze data, learn from patterns, and assist with complex tasks, but it lacks human insight, emotion, and intuition. My perspective on AI is complex—it offers immense potential yet comes with risks that must be carefully managed.
The “good” side of AI lies in its ability to support teachers in ways that could save time and increase student engagement. For example, AI can help streamline grading, provide additional resources, and assist with personalized learning. This allows teachers more time to focus on the meaningful parts of their work: building relationships with students and fostering a love for learning. AI can also provide students with resources to reinforce learning, giving them the chance to explore subjects at their own pace.
However, AI isn’t without its “bad” and even “ugly” sides. One concern I have is the potential for AI to reduce critical thinking and effort in students if they become too reliant on it for answers. Instead of using AI to explore or support their ideas, students might be tempted to take shortcuts, which could lead to laziness and prevent them from fully developing essential problem-solving skills. Moreover, AI is limited by its programming and data, meaning it can inadvertently perpetuate biases or present incomplete information.
As an educator, I was initially hesitant about AI, fearing it might diminish the role of teachers. However, I’ve come to understand that AI cannot replicate the empathy, adaptability, and guidance that educators bring to the classroom. AI is a tool, not a replacement for the human touch. For both teachers and students, AI’s value lies in how thoughtfully it is applied. For teachers, it’s a resource that, if used correctly, can amplify their strengths rather than undermine them.
This project was an amazing experience that truly opened my eyes to the potential of AI. I’m excited to integrate these tools in the field and explore firsthand how they can benefit both teachers and students. I look forward to using these products to enhance learning experiences while keeping the focus on what matters most—building knowledge, fostering curiosity, and creating a supportive environment for all students.
