Some mathematicians of the Third Reich made considerable contributions to modern mathematics. Too often we remember these mathematicians for their positive contributions to the field, while papering over their Nazi affiliations. Celebrating these mathematicians is a disgrace to the millions who lost their lives at the hands of the Nazis and sends the message that some contributions can outweigh the profound moral transgressions of their creators. The following mathematicians continue to be celebrated:
Oswald Teichmüller
Erich Kähler
Herbert Seifert
Ernst Witt
Georg Hamel
Helmut Hasse
Ludwig Bieberbach
Constantin Weber
Gaston Julia
Continuing to use the names of Nazi mathematicians despite the knowledge of their horrendous acts is morally unjustifiable.
