Irrigation Leak Repair

Common Problems with Irrigation Systems and How to Fix Them

An irrigation system is designed to make a person's life easier. However, when something goes wrong with the system, it can be very frustrating. Fortunately, sprinkler repair is often very simple and something the property owner can tackle on his or her own without calling in the pros. Following are some irrigation system problems and how to fix them.

Broken Sprinkler Head

Sprinkler heads often get broken by lawnmowers or when a vehicle runs over them. This is a very common issue and one that the homeowner can easily resolve. Simply dig a trench around the head to expose the riser.

Once the sprinkler head connection is located, unscrew the head from the riser and replace it with a working one. Don't use Teflon tape or joint compound before putting the new head on either. Finally, be sure to set the sprinkler head pattern before filling in the trench.

Clogged Heads

One or more sprinkler heads may become clogged and lead to the need for a repair. Again, dig the non-working head or heads up and turn the top of the head counterclockwise to remove it. Clean the plastic spring basket and head to remove any obstructions. Follow up by adjusting the spray head pattern and bury the repaired head.

Low Water Pressure

Low water pressure is often a sign of a leak in the system. Surprisingly, irrigation leak repair often isn't as complicated as people imagine. The leak can be found between the last working head and the first head that doesn't work. Dig down to the water line and follow the flow of the water until the problem is located. Be sure to turn the system off at the controller before continuing with the repair.

Use a slip coupling and clamps to fix the damaged line. These couplings are designed to contract to make them easier to insert. Simply cut the line at the leak, going an inch or two on the other side. Place a clamp on the line, install the coupling, and tighten the clamp. Repeat on the other end and fill the hole.

Try these repairs before calling for sprinkler repair in Scottsdale. Often, they are enough to resolve the issue. If they do not work, don't hesitate to call on the pros.
