Lough Mask, County Galway
Glacial erratics are boulders and cobbles set down by glaciers - sometimes far from their origin points - that can reveal not only where a glacier existed in the past, but which way it flowed.
In this tour, you'll explore a site near the southern shore of Lough Mask, where glacial erratics are set down on limestone pavement. What differences can you see between the limestone at your feet and some of the rocks set down around you?
If you'd like to learn more about glacial erratics, this page at the website Antarctic Glaciers has lots of fantastic background information and photos. You can also read more about the large Galway lakes in 'The Great Western Lakes' by Michael Simms.
