Glacial Sedimentology at Killiney Cliffs, Dublin
In this virtual tour, you'll explore the glacial sediments exposed in the coastal Killiney Cliffs. A famous spot in Irish glacial history, the cliffs have been studied for hundreds of years and have served as a basis for many theories surrounding the island's glacial past.
Robert Mallet, known as the 'father of sesimology', set off explosives at Killiney beach to study how the velocity of this energy changed as it passed through different types of sedimentary material. More recently, Dr. Mary Bourke of Trinity College Dublin has studied the erosion of the cliffs themselves.
Included with this tour stop are third-level curricular materials focused on glacial sedimentology. There are two activities, one aimed at more introductory level physical geography/sedimentology students and one at advanced-level student in glacial sedimentology. Both include a list of resources, including suggested reading.

Coastal Erosion at Killiney Cliffs, Dublin
This short tour highlights the anti-erosion structures in place along Killiney Beach and the impacts these structures have on beach size and shape.
If you'd like to learn more about sedimentary coastal cliffs (also known as bluffs), you'll find information on bluff history, dynamics, and erosion here at the State of Washington Dept. of Ecology website. The material is focused on Puget Sound in the North American Pacific Northwest, but the content is relevant to sites elsewhere, including here in Ireland.
Also be sure to check out the work of Dr. Mary Bourke of Trinity College Dublin, who is studying the erosion of the cliffs.
