Work in progress
Francesca obtained a BSc in Biological Sciences and a MSc in Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of Siena. She then pursued a joint PhD in Molecular Biomedicine at the University of Trieste (Italy) and the Institute of Oncology Ljubljana (Slovenia), focusing on the development of innovative siRNA-based delivery systems for cancer therapy.
Following her PhD, Francesca worked as a Postdoctoral Scientist at the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute, University of Cambridge (UK), where she investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying inflammatory bowel diseases using patient-derived organoids and advanced genomic approaches. During this time, she contributed to the identification of novel biomarkers and therapeutic targets and was actively involved in international collaborative initiatives such as the Human Gut Cell Atlas.
In June 2024, she joined the Wellcome Sanger Institute (UK) as Postdoctoral Fellow in the Cancer, Ageing and Somatic Mutations Programme, where she investigated mechanisms of drug resistance in lung cancer using CRISPR prime editing technologies combined with single-cell sequencing approaches.
Since January 2026, she has been a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Iorio group at Human Technopole, as part of the “Immunogenomics and Cancer” Flagship Research Programme. Her research focuses on understanding tumour evolution by integrating CRISPR-based and drug perturbation assays with spatial transcriptomics in cellular and patient-derived models.
