EXERCISE & CARDIOVASCULAR  PHYSIOLOGY LABORATORY

Welcome to the Exercise & Cardiovascular Physiology Laboratory (ECPL) at the Incheon National University.

Researchers at ECPL conduct clinical and applied research studies in humans using cutting edge whole-body physiological measures in combination with biochemical techniques. In particular, our laboratory seeks to understand the mechanisms responsible for cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, and pulmonary dysfunction in older adults and patients with cardiovascular, cardiometabolic, cerebrovascular, and pulmonary disease. In addition, we seek to understand the effects of various exercise interventions in recovering these adverse cardiovascular, cardiometabolic, cerebrovascular, and pulmonary alterations. Researchers and students at ECPL experience and are skilled in not only managing and supervising exercise training intervention for human participants but also a wide range of laboratory techniques: ultrasonography for measuring endothelium-dependent vasodilation, blood flow and carotid artery compliance, cuff- and tonometry-based arterial stiffness (i.e., aortic pulse wave velocity and augmentation index), Doppler-based arterial stiffness (i.e., arm and leg pulse wave velocity), maximal oxygen consumption in combination with graded exercise testing, pulmonary function test in a measuring chamber, autonomic nerve function by heart rate variability, tissue oxygenation by NIRS technique, cognitive function test, blood biomarker analysis using ELISA kits, and body composition measures including dual energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA), body water analysis (BWA), and bioelectrical impedance assessment (BIA).
