An Introduction to
THE METACRISIS
BY JOSHUA WILLIAMS — SEPTEMBER 2023
A brief note on the project
The theory of the Metacrisis (best known via Daniel Schmachtenberger's work) is a profound concept that seems to crystallize a general felt sense many of us have and refer to by different names.
While this concept is partly related to some pre-existing terminology (e.g., polycrisis, meaning crisis), it is also different and original. To me, the significance of the theory is its introduction of a coherent frame by which we can better understand root causes for the complex array of global catastrophic risks and the prevailing crises that humanity currently faces. Critically, the Metacrisis theory also calls to our attention a staggering hidden premonition: our civilization structure must drastically change, if we have any hope for the flourishing of life on Earth. To make this change we need to stop searching for bad guys and start stopping bad games.
To solidify my own understanding of this theory and improve my ability to articulate it in conversation with colleagues, peers, and friends, I developed the brief summary linked below. I hope that my summary helps to breakdown this complex concept into a logical and intelligible argument for others to engage with—whether you're completely new to the idea, or someone in need of a clear synopsis.
And as you come to understand the Metacrisis, I believe you should expect to:
Recognize real microcosms of the phenomena I describe, whether at your job or at institutions around you
Notice the deep-rooted dynamics that motivate almost all our behavior in the current day and age
See how even you—if you take a moment to introspect—are captured by the same biases that have led to large-scale risks
Identify the mischaracterizations of complex problems, committed by those on the Left or the Right (and in between)
Feel some degree of overwhelming despair; that said, do not worry: this is not yours or my problem to solve alone; many people are waking up to the need for change; there are several organizations coming at these issues from different angles; and my document ends with brief thoughts on what I believe we can meaningfully do individually (i.e., solving the Metacrisis is not distinct from our individual journeys of personal betterment, personal sovereignty, psychological development, and even, spiritual growth)

I was invited to The Stoa to present a talk on Version 2.0 of this project document and you can watch that recording at the YouTube link above. I am grateful to have had this opportunity to voice-over my work on this document, and I hope you find something useful in it. Finally, thank you for your interest!

Note: The YouTube comment section is also enabled and a request to the audience went out: "an experiment in collective intelligence"—I'm hoping viewers and readers might contribute to future improvements of this document with feedback and/or links to relevant examples that would help elucidate these abstract concepts. Should we collect enough positive contributions, I aim to organize them into an enriched catalog for people interested in deepening their Metacrisis Literacy.
