I'm running the 64-bit version of Arch Linux, with WINE 1.3.2 from [multilib] and winetricks installed.

When I try to install ie6 via winetricks (which I need for both work and a game I'm trying to install ), I get the following error message:

So, what gives? WineHQ shows claims of people being able to install it on a 64-bit Linux system; namely, Ubuntu and openSUSE... no Arch results, and I don't want to post "Garbage" if I'm doing something wrong here.

However, something's still bothering me.

bin32-wine-suse complains about every wineprefix made by "stock" (multilib) WINE being a 64-bit environment, and thus impossible to work with.

So the [multilib] WINE apparently makes a 64-bit Windows-like environment, whatever that would mean to them. I don't really think that's right, knowing how some apps - namely, IE6 and such - complain about this.

Finding out whether you're using the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Internet Explorer in Windows 8 is as simple as finding out which version of Windows you're using. A 32-bit Windows installation will always use the 32-bit Explorer, while the 64-bit Windows installation will always use the 64-bit Explorer. However, Microsoft allows the desktop version of the 64-bit Explorer application to process Web pages in 32-bit compatibility mode to accommodate older browser add-ons. You can check the settings of your 64-bit version of Explorer to find out if the app is processing your pages in 32-bit or 64-bit mode.

Check the "System Type" entry. If it reads "32-bit Operating System," then you're also running the 32-bit version of Explorer. If it reads "64-bit Operating System," then you're using the 64-bit version of Explorer if you use Windows 8.

Scroll down to the "Security" category and find the entry that says "Enable Enhanced Protection Mode." If the box next to the entry is checked, it means your 64-bit version of Explorer is set to process Web pages in 32-bit mode. If the box is unchecked, Explorer will process pages in 64-bit mode. Click "OK" to exit the options window.

@Specky Correct -- there is one version of IE 11 and one version only. However, you should be able to instruct it to run in 32-bit mode or 64-bit mode. That is what the "Enable Enhanced Protected Mode" and "Enable 64-bit processes" are for -- they turn on 64-bit mode.

@PBAdams: Open up Task Manager (ctrl+shift+esc) and tell me what iexplore processes you see there. If Internet Explorer is running in full 64-bit mode, you should see only iexplore.exe processes listed. If, however, you see any iexplore.exe *32 processes listed, that would indicate that the individual tabs are running in 32-bit mode:

On Windows 7 64-bit, the main browser process will always run in 64-bit mode (showing as iexplore.exe). Which version of Internet Explorer are you running? We will get this sorted out for you. :)

Internet Explorer 10 (IE10) is a version of the Internet Explorer web browser released by Microsoft in 2012, and is the default browser in Windows 8.On 12 April 2011, Microsoft released the first "IE10 Platform Preview", which runs only on Windows 7 and later. While the second platform preview was also available for Windows 7 and later, subsequent platform previews run only on Windows 8. The first preview release came four weeks after the final release of Internet Explorer 9.IE10 expands on Internet Explorer 9 functionality with regard to CSS3 support, hardware acceleration, and HTML5 support. On Windows 8, it is divided into two editions with different user interfaces: a Metro app that does not support plug-ins and a traditional desktop application that retains plug-in support. On 64-bit computers, the Metro edition runs in 64-bit mode by default. The desktop edition can be run in 64-bit mode by enabling Enhanced Protected Mode.

Yes. It can run on a PC with Windows 11 or Windows 10. Previous versions of the operating system shouldn't be a problem with Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows Vista having been tested. Windows XP is supported. It comes in both 32-bit and 64-bit downloads.Filed under: Internet Explorer 10 DownloadFree Web BrowsersIE Browsing SoftwareSoftware for Windows 1164-bit downloadsWe have tested Internet Explorer 10 Win7 (Discontinued) against malware with several different programs. Check if you have "Enhanced Protected Mode" enabled (Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Security > uncheck Enable Enhanced Protected Mode). For me when it's disabled I can see 2 instances of iexplore running (in Task Manager > Details) - one i 32-bit, 2nd is 64-bit.

Your best web browser is the gateway to the internet. You shop online, use online-banking and browse sites with personal content. with this configuration we are not able to see the launch links for the office tools on the BPC homepage in internet explorer. I have installed the latest BIG VOL EPM addin (10.0 SP 18 Patch 2 .net 4 build 8873) but no results. Starting Excel normally brings up the EPM and data manager tab so the plug-in itself is working

I have updated the post with a link to MSDN Blogs which indicates that the Internet Explorer application itself will always run in 64-bit mode (so long as you have a 64-bit CPU running a 64-bit version of Windows). Enabling and disabling Enhanced Protected Mode changes the supported content processes (i.e. add-ons) from 32-bit to 64-bit.

As you may be knowing, 64-bit editions of Windows include 32-bit Internet Explorer as well as a 64-bit version. This has been the case since Windows XP Professional x64 Edition and the reason that both editions are included is for compatibility with addons. When 64-bit IE was first introduced, most addons like Flash Player, Java, and most ActiveX controls were 32-bit only. 32-bit addons cannot work with 64-bit IE, that's why Microsoft bundled both x86 and x64 IE versions. Users could easily open whichever IE they wanted but this changed with Internet Explorer 10. Let us see how.

The first 64-bit version of IE was Internet Explorer 6, included in the 64-bit edition of Windows XP. From IE6 all the way till IE9, you could open 32-bit IE from C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\IExplore.exe and 64-bit IE from C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IExplore.exe. In the Task Manager of 64-bit Windows, you can see which IE processes are 32-bit from the Processes tab.

However in Internet Explorer 10, Microsoft made a change - the browser frame process is always 64-bit in IE10 and above but the tab processes are 32-bit by default. Regardless of whether you open IE from Program Files or Program Files (x86), this is the case.

IE10 introduced a new feature called Enhanced Protected Mode. If Enhanced Protected Mode is enabled, then IE enables 64-bit tab processes. Conversely, to enable 64-bit IE, you must go to Internet Options -> Advanced tab and check the option "Enable Enhanced Protected Mode" under the Security section. Thereafter, you must close all IE processes and restart the browser to make all processes 64-bit.

Internet Explorer 11 made another change on 64-bit Windows 8.1. It has two separate options now on the Advanced tab - "Enable Enhanced Protected Mode" and "Enable 64-bit processes for Enhanced Protected Mode". But only enabling "Enable 64-bit processes for Enhanced Protected Mode" seems to turn on 64-bit processes. You don't need to check "Enable Enhanced Protected Mode" like you had to for IE10 to get 64-bit processes.

Before you enable 64-bit IE, you might want to make sure that all the addons you need are compatible. Go to Internet Explorer Tools menu -> Manage Add-Ons to see if your addons are 32-bit, 64-bit or both. The 'Architecture' column shows that as in the picture below:

For one, the size of the 32-bit address space places practical constraints on the ASLR entropy that can be added, and therefore 64-bit applications make it more difficult for an attacker to guess a location in memory.

One of the major differences between 64-bit and 32-bit applications on Windows is the size of the virtual address space that is made available to a process. 64-bit applications whose EXE is linked with the /LARGEADDRESSAWARE flag receive 8 TB in Windows 8 (128 TB in Windows 8.1) of virtual address space whereas 32-bit applications only receive 2 GB by default. The limited amount of address space available to 32-bit applications places practical constraints on the amount of entropy that can be applied by ASLR when randomizing the location of memory mappings. Since 64-bit applications do not suffer from these limitations by default, it is possible to significantly increase the amount of entropy that is used by ASLR. The ASLR implementation in Windows 8 takes full advantage of this opportunity by enabling high degrees of entropy for 64-bit applications. Providing higher degrees of entropy can further decrease the reliability of exploits written by an attacker and also makes it less likely that an attacker will be able to correctly guess or brute force an address.

Prior to Windows 8, 64-bit executable images received the same amount of entropy that was used when randomizing 32-bit executable images (8 bits, or 1 in 256 chance of guessing correctly). The amount of entropy applied to 64-bit images has been significantly increased in most cases starting with Windows 8 ff782bc1db
