What is STEM? STEM stands for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Many people believe that STEM is just a subject at school or a group of classes. But this is far from the truth. STEM is a way of thinking and accomplishing, and it polishes important skills that will not only help you with school but also in your future jobs and internships. Being a part of STEM is not about trying to excel in certain subjects but to harness your abilities in a way that is influential to society.

The science part of STEM shows us how to hypothesize and analyze data by looking at the big picture. The technology part of STEM is important because technology impacts our life at every moment and continues to evolve. It makes our life easier and more efficient. The engineering part of STEM shows how to solve problems and help create new inventions to advance our society. Lastly, the mathematics part of STEM is important since math is everywhere around the world, presenting ways to implement change and minimize errors.

Neither of these subjects are to be considered superior to another. Each subject is like a puzzle piece, fitting together to create a bigger picture. This is why teamwork is such a key element in STEM carriers. Therefore, having a background in STEM strengthens your resume, opening you to multiple career opportunities that allow you to play a substantial role in the progress of our society. In fact, 75% of the world's fastest growing careers are in the STEM field. Despite all of the opportunities only 16% of STEM professionals identify as female or non-binary. As a member of the STEM Academy at my high school, I see first hand how males dominate this field, which can make many females and non-binary students feel discouraged. Therefore, by beginning this blog, we aim to encourage more female and non-binary students to pursue careers in STEM by educating them about the array careers available through articles, getting an inside view of the life of different women who are pursue STEM careers through interviews, and any other information that you need to excel as a woman in STEM!
