Shoppers get paid per batch that they complete. Instacart provides estimates for your earnings on every order as well as total earnings for the week. The amount you earn per batch of orders depends on the number of items, type of items, driving distance, and effort involved in shopping and delivering. You keep 100% of customer tips. As independent contractors, full-service shoppers have the flexibility to work as little or as often as they want. This means that total earnings potential depends on the individual.

In-store shoppers are Instacart employees who earn an hourly wage, detailed in the initial offer letter. In-store shoppers are scheduled for shifts based on personal availability, up to 29 hours each week.

I reached out to Instacart to see if I could try my hand at being a shopper for a day. I went through a basic questionnaire with a company representative, was "hired" for a single shift, and got ready to race through the aisles of Fairway Market in Manhattan.

Instacart gives you stats at the end of your shift, and all in all, my average was about 150 seconds per item. I blame that on things like waiting for a case of water jugs (something someone actually ordered, but being an Instacart shopper teaches you not to judge or question), there being about 40 flavors of energy bars to look through to find Health Warrior peanut butter-chocolate chia bars, and counting how many Brussels sprouts are in a pound. Perhaps I took too much time messaging back and forth with customers about their banana-ripeness preferences. I wonder if they knew that there were different people shopping and delivering their groceries (I didn't, before I took this shift).

After almost four hours of shopping, you'd think I'd want to go home and order takeout immediately. Nope. I changed into regular clothes and zipped through the store to get my groceries for the week. I knew that avocados were on sale, where the best rotisserie chicken was, and that there was only one soy milk left in my favorite brand. Being an Instacart shopper wasn't anything like being on Supermarket Sweep and my own groceries weren't free, but I still skipped the long line. Perks of the job.

Ratings are also tough. If you drop below five stars, the app is designed to show you available trips a few minutes after five-star shoppers, which is basically devastating when your area is oversaturated with shoppers vying for a limited number of good batches.

I've had multiple "female" shoppers who have sent me chats like, "My husband is delivering, please give me a 5 star rating." Or just in general, a different person showing up than who is on the photo. I've noticed this with IC as well as Postmates. What's the deal here? It's about 90% of the time and I order groceries once a week/every two weeks. The first few times I ignored it... but it's so common place now that I decided to look up if this was a thing. I guess this has been going on since last year for a lot of people. Is this really hacking/bait and switch? Technically they are doing the job and I've only had once bad order with IC. Everyone has been great so I'm not out for anyone's job. I'd just like to know why the people delivering/shopping aren't the ones in the photo.

An Instacart spokesperson said the company uses extensive background checks to vet potential shoppers. Instacart also cuts ties with shoppers who engage in fraudulent activity, break laws, or misuse the platform in other ways.

Anyone who applies to be an Instacart shopper will need to go through a background check before working with the company. These checks will use your Social Security number to look through public and private databases for information on your background.

Instacart is the leading grocery delivery platform in the US, and leading grocery technology company in North America, offering same-day delivery and pick-up from an expansive array of stores in the grocery space and beyond. Instacart itself does not hold the inventory from the stores available to shop from on the platform, nor is there any implied relationship between the 1400+ different retailers and grocers (80,000+ stores) customers can shop with through Instacart. Instacart users can conveniently shop from more than one store at a time on Instacart, but each store will have its own separate cart, delivery fees, Instacart shopper, and minimum order value.

Shopper tip: While not required, Instacart suggests that customers leave at least 5% of their total order cost as a tip for their shopper by default. Instacart shoppers can see the offered tip before accepting an order, so a more generous tip may help you secure more speedy service. Consider your personal tipping habits when evaluating how much Instacart will cost for you.

Second, COVID-19 reordered the primary benefits/reasons for using Instacart; this shift in the why of grocery delivery brought a wide range of new shoppers who might not have otherwise ever created an account.

Gift cards from Instacart are often nonrefundable. This means that they cannot be replaced if they become stolen or lost from the time you buy them to the time your order is ready. Instacart has a policy that states its shoppers are not responsible for the activation or redemption of gift cards, which can only add to confusion, while cutting into your time and money.

The Gig Workers Collective told TechCrunch that workers have seen a significant slash to their earnings over the last three months. A shopper in Canada, Daniel Feuer, recently wrote an open letter to Instacart CEO Fidji Simo, who took the helm of the company in July. He created a graph that shows his hourly wage over the last year.

Spatafora is referring to a past Instacart policy that would give shoppers an extra $3 for each order they completed with a five-star rating. Workers were tipped off that the bonus would last through January 2020. But when shoppers went on strike in November 2019 to demand that the default tip be raised from 5% back to 10%, the company removed the bonus soon after. Instacart said that it always planned to end the bonus in November 2019, but the Gig Workers Collective claimed that this was an act of retaliation.

But there's something else happening, too. Instacart's Twitter feed is rife with complaints from customers accusing personal shoppers of stealing their groceries at a time when more people are out of jobs, behind on rent and afraid to go out to shop for themselves. ff782bc1db
