To promote innovative practices and support professional development in Chinese language instruction, the Chinese Language Association of Secondary-Elementary Schools (CLASS) is proud to launch the inaugural “Chinese Teaching Star” Innovative Teaching Contest. This contest seeks to identify and share exemplary Chinese teaching practices while providing a platform for teachers to showcase their accomplishments, exchange insights, and learn collaboratively.
The theme of the 2025 competition is “Language as a Bridge, Communication at the Core: Innovative Practices of the Three Modes of Communication in the Chinese Classroom.” Participating teachers were required to design a lesson centered on this theme, explicitly highlighting the three modes of communication in alignment with the ACTFL World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages. Detailed requirements are available on our website: https://classk12.org/contests/innovative-teaching-contest/
This year’s contest received 32 lesson submissions from 14 states, representing grade levels from preschool through Grade 12. Participants came from Chinese immersion programs, Chinese as a foreign language programs, and weekend Chinese schools, reflecting the competition’s broad reach and diversity.
The submissions were of high quality and rich in content, covering topics such as daily life, idioms and folktales, science, Chinese philosophy, intercultural communication, and social-emotional learning. The lessons demonstrated a thoughtful balance of language instruction, cultural depth, and pedagogical innovation.
After a thorough and impartial review by the judging panel, six teachers were selected for first, second, and third prizes, and eight teachers received individual awards.
This contest provided a valuable platform for Chinese educators to showcase their professional achievements and exchange pedagogical insights, making a meaningful contribution to the advancement of Chinese language education.
