If you want a roof-mounted solution that maximizes aerodynamic efficiency and offers dual-side access for quick loading, choose INNO WEDGE660; if you need a hitch-mounted platform that swings clear to open your rear hatch without unloading, choose Yakima EXO SwingBase Hitch.
• INNO WEDGE660: Its biggest strength is the 11 cubic feet of enclosed, weather-protected storage with a low-profile wedge design that cuts wind noise; the trade-off is that it requires roof bars and blocks rear access when locked. This pick is for drivers who prioritize highway quietness and want to carry bulky gear like skis or long luggage.
• Yakima EXO SwingBase Hitch: Its defining advantage is the ability to swing the entire loaded carrier away from the vehicle in one motion to access the trunk; the trade-off is the lower total capacity of 10 cubic feet and the fact that it hangs off the rear bumper. This pick is for delivery drivers and campers who frequently need to reach their cargo area while keeping gear secured.
The INNO WEDGE660 is engineered for those who spend significant time on the road and need a seamless integration with their vehicle's roofline. With its sleek, low-profile wedge shape, this unit is designed to slice through the air rather than catch it, which directly translates to reduced wind noise during long-distance travel. The construction utilizes an advanced SPM injection process that creates a structure up to 50% stronger than conventional vacuum-formed boxes, ensuring durability without adding excessive weight.
What truly sets this box apart is the dual-side opening mechanism. You can load and unload items from either side of the vehicle, which is a massive practical advantage when parking in tight spots where only one door might be accessible. The memory mount system simplifies the process significantly; once you have the initial setup complete, removing and reattaching the box becomes a straightforward task that maintains a secure fit every time. This is not just about convenience; it is about safety. The advanced safety lock system prevents key removal until the box is fully secured, meaning you never have to worry about the lid popping open or the keys being lost while driving.
This product is ideal for families going on winter sports trips, as it can accommodate up to four snowboards or six to eight pairs of skis without taking up interior space. It is also perfect for those who value the "Made in Japan" engineering standard, known for precision and reliability. However, if your primary goal is frequent access to your trunk or rear hatch while the car is parked, this roof box will frustrate you. Once locked, the contents are completely inaccessible unless you climb onto the roof bars to open the lid. If you are a delivery driver who needs to drop off packages and then immediately access the back of the van or SUV to grab more inventory, this design does not support that workflow.

The Yakima EXO SwingBase Hitch serves a very different, highly specific purpose: it transforms a standard 2-inch hitch receiver into a versatile, swinging cargo platform. The core feature here is the ability to swing the entire assembly away from the vehicle with a single motion. This allows you to walk right up to your rear hatch or trunk and open it normally, even if the rack is fully loaded with 10 cubic feet of gear. For anyone who hates the chore of unloading everything just to get a bag out of the back seat, this feature is a game-changer. It turns a static cargo carrier into a dynamic part of your daily vehicle utility.
The included GearLocker provides 10 cubic feet of storage, which is slightly less than the INNO box, but the 100-pound weight capacity ensures you can haul heavy tools, camping gear, or large suitcases without compromising the hitch stability. The system uses the EXO Cleat and locking SpeedKnobs for tool-free installation, making it easy to attach or remove based on your needs. Security is handled by the included HitchLock and SKS locks, ensuring your gear stays safe from theft during stops. The black finish gives it a rugged, utilitarian look that fits well with vehicles used for work or active outdoor lifestyles.
This product is the clear winner for delivery drivers. Imagine making multiple stops where you need to drop off a package and then immediately return to the rear of the vehicle to retrieve the next order. With the Yakima, you simply swing the rack aside, open the hatch, grab the item, and swing it back. There is no climbing, no roof rummaging, and no risk of damaging the roof rails. It is also excellent for tailgaters or campers who set up camp and need to access the cooler or supplies inside the vehicle quickly. The trade-off is that it sits lower and sticks out further behind the bumper, which can affect clearance in tight garages or narrow trails, and it relies entirely on the hitch receiver rather than roof bars.
• Best for Rear Hatch Access → Yakima EXO SwingBase Hitch: The swing-away function allows you to use the trunk or hatch without unloading anything, a feature the roof box cannot match.
• Best for Aerodynamics and Highway Noise → INNO WEDGE660: The wedge design and low profile significantly reduce drag and wind noise compared to a hanging hitch rack.
• Best for Ski/Snowboard Storage Capacity → INNO WEDGE660: With 11 cubic feet and a dedicated layout, it holds more winter sports gear (up to 4 boards) than the 10-cubic-foot hitch base.
• Best for Delivery Drivers → Yakima EXO SwingBase Hitch: The ability to swing the load aside and access the rear instantly makes it far more efficient for frequent stop-and-go logistics.
• Best for Dual-Side Loading Convenience → INNO WEDGE660: You can load from either side of the vehicle, whereas the hitch rack is only accessible from the rear.
• Best for Heavy-Duty Load Stability → Yakima EXO SwingBase Hitch: The 100-pound capacity on a hitch mount often feels more stable for very heavy, dense items than a roof box on crossbars.
• Best for Quick Removal/Installation → INNO WEDGE660: The memory mount system is designed for fast, repeatable mounting on roof bars once the initial setup is done.
• Best for Vehicles Without Roof Bars → Yakima EXO SwingBase Hitch: It only requires a standard 2-inch hitch receiver, whereas the INNO box demands compatible roof rails or crossbars first.
In my opinion, the choice comes down to how you interact with your vehicle's storage. If you are looking for a clean, quiet, and high-capacity solution for family vacations or weekend getaways, the INNO WEDGE660 is the superior engineering marvel. It keeps your roof clutter-free and protects your gear from the elements with its robust, Japanese-built shell. However, I recommend the Yakima EXO SwingBase Hitch for the delivery driver. The efficiency of swinging the rack aside to access the trunk saves minutes on every single stop, a time-saving feature that outweighs the slight loss in storage volume. For a professional or someone who treats their vehicle as a mobile workspace, that swing-away capability is worth every penny.
Yes, the wedge design and low profile of the INNO WEDGE660 are specifically engineered to reduce wind resistance and noise, making it significantly quieter on highways than a hanging hitch rack like the Yakima.
Absolutely. The defining feature of the Yakima system is that you can swing the entire loaded platform away from the vehicle, allowing you to open the rear hatch or trunk without unloading any gear.
The INNO WEDGE660 offers 11 cubic feet of storage, which is slightly larger than the 10 cubic feet provided by the Yakima EXO SwingBase Hitch, giving you a bit more room for luggage or sports equipment.
Yes, the INNO WEDGE660 is designed to be mounted on aero or square roof bars, whereas the Yakima EXO SwingBase Hitch attaches directly to a standard 2-inch vehicle hitch receiver.
