10th International Conference of Museums for Peace


The International Network of Museums for Peace (INMP) announces its 10th International Conference of Museums for Peace (INMP 2020) to be held in Kyoto and Hiroshima (Japan) on September 16-20, 2020, with the Conference theme, “The Role of Museums for Peace in Conveying Memories for Generations to Come.”

The 10th Conference is organized by INMP and co-organized by Hiroshima City, Ritsumeikan University, Kyoto University of Art and Design, Kyoto Seika University and Ikenobo College.

The Organizing Committee is chaired by Professor Shin’ichi Ago, Director of the Kyoto Museum for World Peace at Ritsumeikan University, who has been co-working with Professor Ikuro Anzai, General Coordinator of INMP. The Committee has been vigorously endeavoring to make the conference interesting and fruitful, and sincerely expects as many people as possible to attend the international conference from all over the world.

2020 is the year that the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games will be held in Japan, July 24 - September 6. October is very crowded in Kyoto and Hiroshima during the autumn tourist season. Therefore, the 10th Conference will be held in mid-September (September 16-20) when the university is still in summer vacation and there is no difficulty in securing conference rooms.

Conference Schedule (Tentative):

  • September 16 Ritsumeikan University Kinugasa Campus, Kyoto: Opening program, Progress report, Keynote Speech, Japanese culture presentation, Young generations’ symposium on the conference theme, Panel discussions by peace museum curators on the conference theme; Welcome party
  • September 17 Ritsumeikan University Kinugasa Campus, Kyoto: Presentation of papers, symposia, panel discussions, workshops, exhibitions, poster presentation; Mini excursion
  • September 18 International Manga Museum, Kyoto: Excursion, Visit and discussion on special exhibition “Heiwa-Boke Manga Exhibition” (※Heiwa-Boke means “an insensitive mindset to peace issues caused by apparent sustained peace”)
  • September 19 Ritsumeikan University Kinugasa Campus, Kyoto: Presentation of papers, Symposia, Panel discussions, Workshops, Exhibitions, Poster presentations, Special lecture on Japanese traditional culture; INMP general meeting, General discussions on Kyoto program; Dinner party
  • September 20 Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, Hiroshima: Tour to the A-bomb Dome, Visit to Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park, Welcome ceremony by Hiroshima City Mayor, Visit to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, Lecture by an A-bomb survivor, Discussions by participants; Farewell Party

The Conference Theme

The Main Conference Theme is "The Role of Museums for Peace in Conveying Memories for Generations to Come."

The Conference Sub-Themes are:

· Restoring a Livable Mother Earth

「平和のための博物館国際ネットワーク」(International Network of Museums for Peace, INMP)は「第10回国際平和博物館会議(INMP 2020)」を2020年9月16日(水)~20日(日)、京都と広島を舞台に開催します。メイン・テーマは「次世代への記憶の継承と平和博物館の役割」です。

  • 9月19日 立命館大学衣笠キャンパス: 参加者からの報告、シンポジウム、パネル討論会、ワークショップ、展示、ポスター・セッション、日本文化に関する特別講演、INMP総会、夕食会
  • 9月20日 広島平和記念資料館: 原爆ドーム見学、広島平和記念講演訪問、広島市歓迎行事(市長挨拶)、広島平和記念資料館の見学、原爆被爆者講演、参加者による討論、フェアウェル・パーティ
