Aside from playing every instrument there is, UK musical polymath _____________ also flies planes. One day his private jet had a near-fatal encounter with a developing hurricane, and he got this suitably dramatic piece of prog-pop out of it.

The 1___________________ is a comprehensive, undergraduate-focused music program that blends the best of innovation, conservatory rigor and liberal arts inquiry. Students majoring in music at UT have the opportunity to become highly skilled music educators, versatile performers, innovative music technologists and composers, scholars of music history and theory, and much more. Our professionally diverse UT music faculty are passionate about guiding students toward success, while nurturing each student's musical and intellectual growth through individualized instruction.

The music curriculum at UT provides a flexible framework for students to develop their musical talents to a high level of proficiency while cultivating creativity, collaborating across disciplines in the College of Arts and Letters, discovering new musical interests and becoming intellectually engaged through the enjoyment of music. Following graduation, dedicated UT music students are ready to meet the challenges of a professional music career and are well-prepared for the most selective graduate music programs in the nation.

The Music Department's mission, goals and objectives are appropriate to institutions of higher education, appropriate to the field of music, compatible with National Association of Schools of Music standards, and demonstrate that the fundamental purposes of the institution and the department are education. The Music Department majors -- Music and Music Industry -- have been approved as liberal arts degrees.

The Music Department's 14:1 student/teacher ratio allows for engaging and meaningful mentorships, often highlighted in independent studies where faculty guide students working on their own research projects and creative activities. Students also have the opportunity to go on music-focused faculty-led trips across the globe, such as recent trips to Spain with Dr. Adam Kent (pianist) and England with Dr. Timothy Newton (choral director). In 2011, the Jazz Appreciation Society traveled with Professor Art Falbush (Big Band director) to New Orleans to help in the rebuilding of the Lower Ninth Ward after Hurricane Katrina.

Since 2010, the Oneonta Jazz Festival has brought world-class musicians to perform with our students and has attracted student ensembles from middle/high schools, community colleges and universities around the Northeast. The annual New Music Focus Week has, since 2010, brought innovative composers and performers of new music to campus each spring for a weeklong residency to work with students and present performances, panel discussions, technical demonstrations and art gallery exhibitions, as well as improvisation and instrument-building workshops.

The Center is proud to continue the rich legacy of the Crested Butte Music Festival. In the coming months we will be expanding our classical, jazz, blues, and bluegrass offerings, and look forward to bringing high-quality artists in these genres to Crested Butte year-round. We are currently in the process of mapping what this programming will look like at the Center.

The British chef April Bloomfield and the restaurateur Ken Friedman, the well-loved team behind the Spotted Pig and the Breslin, have reincarnated their baroque Tenth Avenue seafood restaurant the John Dory (which closed within a year of opening, in 2009) as a more casual annex to the Ace Hotel. Gone are the entres and the overambition; new are a blas attitude (high stools, no reservations) and the dispassionate embrace that you find in a place that considers itself the epicenter of cool.

Do you know a middle or high school student who is gifted in math and science? Openings are still available in the OPTIONS summer camps hosted by the University of Evansville's College of Engineering and Computer Science. Thanks to a generous grant from the Alcoa Foundation, scholarships are also available for middle and high school girls attending OPTIONS, which introduces students to the vast career possibilities in engineering and computer science. 5376163bf9
