Kelley has been a professional sound designer for major Hollywood films for over 3 decades. He had many snippits of advice and knowledge... which I have listed below:
The Blair Witch sound was completely reworked by the studio that bought it. They spent about a million dollars on the audio. They couldn't really fix the video.. but audio can be fixed... in this, case... so the dialog could be distinctly heard. The studio marketed it as a 40,000 dollar film but they actually spent twice that on sound design alone.
Boom mics are better for location shots. TV uses lavaliers a lot. Film uses booms more. Many times directors use both types ... and multiple mics.
Sound Design has to be story driven... only
... Create the universe first... environment... Sometimes it's just the sound of air.
... then adjust the voice levels.
... filter out unwanted sounds.
... add foley
... add extra environment for extra texture.
... add emotional scoring or effects
... add score
... final mix
His short film... "two people in bed"... tells the story in the audio several different ways. It's a great demonstration piece for the importance of sound design in story telling.
