What are Geomembranes?
A geomembrane is, in essence, a layer of plastic or composite material placed in the bottom of a landfill or containment area to prevent waste from leaking into the groundwater. Many countries have some sort of requirements dictating the quality or durability of geomembranes.
One popular material used for geomembranes is LLDPE, linear low-density polyethylene, a type of polymer or plastic. It is used in a dizzying range of applications beyond geomembranes; a few examples include consumer products such as plastic bags, stretch wrap, and containers.
Why LLDPE Geomembranes?
The close cousin to LLDPE is HDPE, high-density polyethylene. LLDPE offers a range of advantages over HDPE geomembranes for certain applications:
• LLDPE is more flexible than HDPE. As waste containment installations generally have uneven slopes, it is better to have a material that conforms more to the shape of the slopes.
• LLDPE has higher elongation properties than HDPE. In other words, LLDPE can be stretched much further before it reaches a breaking point.
• LLDPE tends to be more resistant to punctures. Because it is more elastic and flexible, LLDPE is more difficult to puncture, making for a more secure, reliable geomembrane.
The technical advantages of geosynthetics are the engineered, testable, quality monitored properties of geosynthetic products versus the often difficult to verify quality and specs of naturally occurring materials. Different geosynthetic materials can be combined in order to perform desired functions, often yielding higher "rates" than the components taken separately.

Geomembranes vary in chemical resistance, flexibility and cost depending on what material is used to construct them. Here's a look at the properties of different grades of plastic and rubber and what they offer.
HDPE: High density polyethylene is known for being relatively inexpensive but with good chemical resistance and weld strength. However, it has low puncture resistance, may crack under stress and has a high degree of thermal expansion.
PVC: Polyvinyl chloride or PVC can have fabricated seams, has good layflat behavior and is easy to seam. Conversely, it doesn't fare well under high and low temperatures and doesn't resist UV light well.
fPP-R: fPP-R, a polypropylene and rubber-based material, can be factory fabricated and has sound multiaxial properties. It handles strain well and maintains performance under low and high temperatures. However, chlorinated water and hydrocarbons weaken strength and durability.
LLDPE: Linear low density polyethylene is flexible, has better layflat and better multiaxial strain properties compared to HDPE. These benefits are balanced by poorer chemical and UV resistance, benefits offered by HDPE.
EPDM: EPDM or ethylene propylene diene monomer is a synthetic rubber known for its sealing characteristics. In geomembranes, it shows good performance in low temperatures, very goof layflat behavior and sound resistance to UV light. What it lacks is a resistance to oils and hydrocarbons in addition to having less than satisfactory seam quality.
Butyl rubber: Also a synthetic rubber, butyl rubber shows good resistance to UV light and weathering. Its drawbacks include difficulty seaming, low tear strength and poor resistance to hydrocarbons.
Irrespective of what type of geomembrane is used, landfill preparation is crucial to deciding how effective liners are. For instance, sharp objects must be removed from the area as even if the membrane resists punctures well, weather conditions and chemicals will cause it to wear down over time.
When combined with geotextiles - plastic fabrics that separate water, waste and soil - geomembranes see increased resistance to tears and containment. In fact, most landfills lined with membranes are used in conjunction with geotextiles.
Geomembranes are also used in leachate ponds to prevent leachate from seeping into soil. A drainage system, filters, sumps and pumps are used and all components including the health of the membranes must be monitored since waste decomposes unevenly, buckles and distorts pipelines. If proper planning, execution and maintenance of leachate ponds is neglected, not only will waste seep into soil but gas production will increase.
HDPE Liner is supplied by many companies having special characteristic features and use. Thickness of these HDPE high density liner pipe ranges from 0.5 mm to 2.5 mm (including 0.75 mm, 1.0 mm, 1.5 mm and 2.0 mm). Rolls of the HDPE pipe liner are twenty three feet wide. But the length of these pipes vary due to the thickness of the membranes. Most demanding applications always need these HDPE Liner pipes due to their high chemical resistibility as well as high tensile strength. In addition, resistance to stress crack along with low temperature characteristic features make these liners most appropriate for containment. The basic property of these liners also include inertness to chemicals and resistance to hydrocarbons. This is what makes them the most standard product in reliable containment functioning.
Basic and Important features of HDPE Liner
Some of the very important as well as basic characteristic features of High Density Polyethylene pipeliners are:
1. Permeability is low: Leachets are not able to penetrate the pipelining system of polyethylene of high density. This makes the system safe and secure. Thus, on one hand, it does not allow methane gas to escape the pipe and on the other, does not allow rainwater to seep into the HDPE liner.
2. Resistance to chemicals: The linings constructed out of high density polyethylene are highly resistant to chemicals and thus it is not threatened by any sort of leachate of hazardous waste or solid. Thus, these linings are most suitable for secondary containment of storage facilities for chemicals and sludge.
3. Increased resistance to ultraviolet: If carbon black is added then the UV exposure resistance increases manifold. Volatilization of the material is not at all a problem as the plasticizers are absent.
4. Reflectivity as a factor: Geomembranes of HDPE are available in both black and white. The white surface helps in visual inspection and also in mitigating the temperature extremes of pipe liner.
Usage of HDPE liner in Various Applications
There are many applications where these liners are used and some of them are landfill closures / caps, liners of lagoon, primary as well as secondary containment landfill, liners of pond as well as agricultural ponds, reservoirs of portable water, canal linings, tank linings, retention pond and many more.

1). Fire Hydrant Pond - Use of PE Geomembrane / Sheet in the Fire Ponds make a barrier and prevent water seepage from the pond. Fire ponds can be small or large.
2). Reservoirs - No matter how small or large, easy or complex, Liners / Geomembranes can be installed for any reservoir to stop seepage.
3). Ash Dyke - It has a lower tendency to exchange ions with leachate constituents and maintains its integrity as a barrier and prevents the underground water contamination.
4). Hazardous Solid Waste Landfill - The function of a liner system is to prevent passage of leachate to the subsoil. This is achieved by placing a barrier layer at the base of the landfill. It may be one or more layers of clay or a synthetic flexible membrane (or a combination of these).
