I am a Machine Learning (or, more fashionably, AI) researcher by training and profession.
As of February 2025, I am employed as the Head of AI at KnowDis.AI, a start-up that uses AI to provide search solutions for e-commerce platforms.
I have a PhD and and MS (Computer Science) from University of Maryland, College Park, USA, for both of which I was advised by Prof. Lise Getoor. I also have a BTech. (Computer Science and Engineering) from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.
Since obtaining my PhD in December 2006, I have worked in AI research in both academia (as Assistant Professor at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore) and industry (as Principal Scientist in TCS Research, and Senior Scientist at IBM Research India).
As formal engagements outside of "work", I try to contribute to the AI ecosystem in India in teaching, mentoring and administrative / organizational capacities.
Beyond professional work, my sources of joy are wide-ranging. These include reading, thinking, learning and understanding, writing, teaching and mentoring, sports (especially red-ball cricket), music, gardening (to the extent a balcony permits). In different phases of my life, these sources have also included sketching, photography, cinema, cooking and learning languages. Perhaps not coincidentally, I do not have any formal training in any of these.
