Ready to make change? Here are actions you can take every day to join the #resistance.
Get out the vote: Help other districts in swing elections and in 2018!
The Sister District Project can help you find a place to channel your progressive energy in places where it will make a real difference. They will connect you with a local home district team that is matched with a strategic, winnable race that needs your support. Related, Swing Left will locate your nearest competitive congressional district where you can work to try to oust a Trumpian candidate or support a progressive ahead of the 2018 midterm election. You can also help get more progressives elected throughout the country in 2018 with It Starts Today. This organization is using a "rising tide lifts all boats" approach to fundraising, equally donating to progressives in every House and Senate race in the country, starting with monthly subscriptions as little as $4.68. Flippable, meanwhile, has created a statistical model to determine which seats are the most flippable, and direct funds to those candidates. You can also write postcards to voters in special elections, or host a postcard-writing party!
Get strategic with the Indivisible Guide
Indivisible is a practical guide for resisting the Trump agenda. It was created by former congressional staffers to reveal best practices for making Congress listen, leveraging lessons from the Tea Party's successful obstruction of progressive agendas. Start here to learn the most effective way to mobilize. You can also sign up on their website to get a weekly email with specific actions to take to defend healthcare, push for an independent investigation into Trump's conflicts of interest, protect immigrant and civil rights, and more.
Online petitions and even letters to congress are often ignored, but phone calls from constituents are tabulated daily. Although we are lucky in the 4th district to have representatives who are standing up to the Trump agenda, it is still crucially important that they hear our support. You can be sure the pro-Trump forces are mobilizing their calls as well. 5 Calls and Daily Action are among several sites that make it easy by providing a list of issues, phone numbers, and scripts for reaching out to your Members of Congress (MOCs). Make sure you leave your name and address to be counted.
- Bookmark your representative's sites. For CT District 4, that is Senator Murphy, Senator Blumenthal, and Representative Himes
- Add their phone numbers to your contacts/speed dial
- Visit 5 Calls , Daily Action, or a similar site daily (or sign up for their action emails) to get a script for making your calls on issues you care about. You can even use resistbot to send off a quick fax to your MOCs with a text from your phone or PC.
Reach out to your state and local representatives or candidates running for office
You can find the state legislators representing your town at the CGA website.
We have also collected contacts for 4th District mayors, first selectmen, and the governor.
Finally, you can find a list of local candidates and political committees at SEEC's website. Simply click the top link for the upcoming election (e.g. Nov 2018).
Support causes you care about
Donate time or money to organizations that are fighting the good fight. You can also consider a monthly donation to It Starts Today, which will use the funds to support progressive nominees in the 2018 House and Senate election. And of course, we gladly welcome a donation to ICT4 in any amount to help support our work right here in CT's 4th district.
Boycott Trump brands and call Trump businesses
Learn more about this effort to pressure retailers to stop carrying Trump brands, or see the latest list at Grab Your Wallet. There's also an app to show businesses connected to Trump. And since the White House shut down its phone comment line, you can now lodge complaints about Trump's plans directly with one of his properties. Since he has not divested from his businesses, and considers his hotels and golf courses satellite White Houses, go ahead and share your thoughts directly via WhiteHouseInc.
Get an app for that
This article lists a dozen sites and apps you can use to resist the Trump agenda. Some apps text you actions you can take each day or week, others list public meetings for members of Congress, another lists closest districts where you can work to help a competitive race swing left. Another helps you dial Trump properties to complain about his agenda (since the White House shut down its telephone comment line, and Trump hasn't divested from his businesses.) You can also use ResistBot to contact your reps with just a text.

Take direct action against fake news and the alt-right with Sleeping Giants
"Most firms have no idea that their ads are appearing on hate sites because of something called "programmatic advertising.” Sleeping Giants began to notify advertisers of their presence on Breitbart News. As of today, over 250 [now 2000!] companies have pulled their ads down from Breitbart News and there are more every single day thanks to thousands of Giants who are working day and night to inform them." More info from NYTImes
Sleeping Giants is dedicated to stopping racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, and anti-Semitic news sites by stopping their ad dollars. They lay out a simple plan for everyday citizens to reduce the monetary incentive for fake news providers:
- Go to Breitbart News and take a screenshot of a company ad next to Breitbart's content
- Tweet the image to the company with a polite, non-offensive note to notify them of the placement
- Tag @slpng_giants so they can keep track of the progress
